Great tutorial! I tried it out, but I did get confused a bit. I was wondering if you could elaborate on a couple of things. I'd really appreciate it. :)
I was doing fine until I got to this part:
THIS IS WHERE IT GETS KINDA CONFUSING Now select the icon, go to edit>>copy merge>>edit>>paste
Am I supposed to merge all of the layers before this step? Or do I just select all the layers by going to Select -> All, and then do the Edit -> Copy Merged, and then Edit -> Paste? I'm just confused because I don't know if the layers should be merged before this step or not. I didn't merge my layers when I did this, because I didn't see it mentioned in the tut. I could have missed it though. I'm a bit new to this.
So obviously I was confused with how to save this, too. I have the two merged layers that you mentioned, but I wasn't able to do the Smart Sharpen step because I only have CS, not CS2, and it isn't an option. I hope that doesn't matter too much. Is there an alternative to that? I don't think there is, but I just figured I'd ask.
I'm assuming that this should get saved as a .png, but I just wanted to make sure.
The whole "edit->copy merged" step really through me off, LOL. I hope I'm making sense though. Any help would be appreciated! Thank you!
Am I supposed to merge all of the layers before this step? No, when you get to that step just go to select>>all,,and then go to edit>>copy merged, and then go back up to edit>>paste and there should be a new layer that looks like all the layers as one image (i hope that makes sense). You don't have to flatten the image...you could if you want, it wouldn't make a difference. Eee, i hope i made sense :)
The smart sharpen doesn't make that much of a difference, it just brings a little more contrast, but it's not necessary. I'm not sure about an alternative, though...
And if you want to save all of the steps to refer to later, save it as a .psd. If you want to upload it to the internet save it as either .jpg or .png (i like .png because it's a smaller file than .jpg---good for livejournal icons).
If you want to download the .psd file i have up there, it might clear a few things up that i may not have explained well :)
Wow, that was quick! That cleared it all up. Thank you so much for the reply! :)
My end result isn't that great, but I started out with a pretty crappy quality picture, so that could be why. And I'm still learning, lol. I'm going to save this to my memories for future use. Thanks again! &Hearts;
Ahaha, I'm always on the computer (i have no cable in my room) so this is my entertainment at night :P I'm glad I was able to clear it up for you, you're very welcome :)
And don't worry, when I first started out I didn't even know there were different layer settings (screen, soft light, ect) I didn't know anything. It's pretty easy to learn, though. There are a lot of good tutorials out there that explain everything. I hope you have fun with it!
