Good vs. the Universe

Apr 05, 2006 12:05

One of my coworkers and I just got into a debate about whether or not the universe will be kinder to good people. He says that the universe will be more inclined to cut you a break for being a good person; I say not. Being good isn't going to have a steady rate of return as far as getting what you want, nor should it. It's not like earning stars on a chore chart--you won't necessarily get a prize at the end, and if you did, it would take the merit out of being good in the first place. So I say that one has to both be good and cover one's ass. Hence one of my basic principles: enjoy today, but be cautious, and unless you've been given reason to believe otherwise, never assume that the universe isn't going to pull the rug out from under your feet tomorrow. Sort of a reverse Scarlett O'Hara, but without the velvet dress. That's ok: green really isn't my color.
