So I got two "Yes on 8" mailings today. I burned the first one right after seeing it. The second one I'm shredding only after I write this

I kinda hate the whole thing. It just gets uglier and uglier.
That said, in regards to civil unions, I think that it's pure crap. civil unions and marriage are not the same thing but I fear that prop 8 is going to pass. I think that the next front will be address it properly (other then the current way) and to make all existing marriages "civil unions" and allow the churches to preform "marriages." Then gay couples and straight couples would have the same rights. But even then, liberal churches, like the UU's, would perform marriage ceremonies anyway. The gay couples would still get married and the fundies would be pissed cause "the gays stole our marriages!!!!" The current situation is the best way to resolve this. And ultimately it is stupid to argue about it. This is really just something to stir the conservative base to action. If they can get people out there who will vote because "teh gays are stealin our marriages!!!" Then these people will probably vote for McCain and then (possibly but unlikely) McCain wins. And if it's not that, it's just a way to keep the real arguments in our political world from being discussed.
Exactly! exactly! That is what SHOULD be happening, but the anti-gay marriage people are too focused on their religious definition of marriage and everyone else just wants equal treatment no matter what it's called..but it's not civil unions in their current state. Plus, the churches are free to do whatever they want still, nobody's forcing them to acknowledge gay marriages.
I don't think prop 8 is the best way to resolve this. However, it does mean that a prop 8 defeat could impact other states. I really, really hope that it does get defeated.
I really hope it is defeated. I have a few friends and family that will be impacted. It makes me angry that people can be so close minded and hurt those that I care for.
