WHOIS privacy?

Apr 21, 2008 00:22

I'm sure I am not the only one who gets flooded with spam for my irl address and my email that was scraped from a whois on a domain I own.

Why the hell isn't most of the information displayed in a whois private? Address? Phone number? What the hell ICANN?!

I would imagine that a name and contact email would suffice in most cases (sheesh, the email address on most of my public whoises is blackholed anyway because of the spam...). Registries can keep the rest of the information private until someone has a request (e.g. law enforcement)...even if the request is by some curious person doing it over the phone just for fun I wouldn't mind because it is effort most people would not care to take in most situations. It would solve so many spam and privacy issues.
