Originally uploaded by janeylicious I went to the launch event yesterday...this event. Tom Brokaw (linky to pic from news.com) introduced Steve Ballmer who did the keynote. I actually found Brokaw to be more interesting, he was talking about how technology has affected the world but how it can't do everything..and well..he did mention how the people he doesn't remember by name were the ones he felt made huge changes as well, not just the big names (MLK, presidents, etc.)..or basically, how the nonamers like ourselves are the real heroes (the first mention..grarghhh). Surprisingly he was sort of knowledgeable..or at least someone proofread his speech..cause he didn't screw up with the tech jargon ("i'm not here to design new apps!", "can't hit backspace to solve global warming", and some blurb about wireless networks..).
I'm not sure he was right about how technology can't solve everything though. It may not be able to solve everything, but it can help solve many different problems. Someone just needs to care about solving the problems. Technology can be used in innovative ways to teach people, for example. I can only imagine the kinds of things something like the XO-1 (olpc laptop) can do in third world countries..or how we could estimate the kinds of things we can do to get a better "feel" for slowing down and even possibly reversing global warming..who knows?
Anyway, the next person who mentions the word hero is going to be punched in the face, HARD.
