Summary: At the end of the tunnel, there's light.
Jin asked him once, "Did you find God?" He'd snarled it like a challenge, glaring haughtily at Kame and daring him to answer.
Kame had looked at him: the way he was hunched deep into himself, hiding behind his hat and his wild hair and pathetic beard and messy hobo clothes. Where the world saw moodiness and anger, Kame saw desperation and a profound unhappiness, so different from the boy who had shone with promise and delight. He saw and didn't know how to respond; this was not some gloom Kame could lift him out of with a compliment or an easy joke. As much as it pained him to admit, he knew that this was something he couldn't help with, that Jin needed to figure out for himself.
"No," he'd replied at last, choosing honesty as the best policy. "But I found peace."
That was all Kame could give him. Hopefully, one day, it would be enough.

"Was it worth it?" Kame asks him, months, years later.
"Yes," says Jin, without hesitation.
Kame looks at him: at the contentment; the clean-cut lines of his face; the easy, confident clarity of his gaze. There are no shadows now, just lightness.
"Do you hate me?" Jin asks, guilt creeping into his expression.
Kame shakes his head, smiles. "No," he says. "I'm glad."
And he is.
