Observations & Valentine's Day fifth set

Mar 06, 2005 20:54

I had a minimum stress level week, but I ended up being tired for almost every day. I've been thinking a lot, and I think that I work better in the wee hours of the morning when the entire apartment is quiet. I play my music quietly in my room, and I just sit on the bed and read or write or attempt to write or organize a drawer or add more ( Read more... )

AHH! I LOVE your comments and entries, I swear. You always make me think about things I hadn't given thought to before. Thanks for your observations on the ship :)

What I thought was really interesting about both stories is that Ginny is definitely the dominant one in both relationships.

You're right - see, I've always thought that they're a lot alike. Smart, sense of humor, has internal pain and has suffered personally because of Voldemort, and are quick to action. I still can't really figure why they both mesh so well.

Also, I was rereading OotP today and although there are hardly any references of Ginny and Sirius, I know it's really foolish of me when I went "Whee!" when Sirius helped Ginny up after they portkey'ed to Grimmauld Place when Arthur was attacked, and when Sirius was telling the Weasley's that the best they could do was wait and Ginny sat down instantly, while Fred and George threw the fit. Am trying so hard not to be sucked into this ship.

*racks mind* I think the only Ginny/Tom fic I've read is the Cassie Claire trilogy as well. I agree with you - I think that her characterization of everyone is off by loads, but the story's enjoyable for its plot and dialogue, and she uses great allusions to other things really well - and Tom's obsession with Ginny is awesome. At first I was into the trilogy for the Draco and Harry friendship, and then the Draco/Ginny aspect, and it was with her latest 2 or 3 chapters that I started paying more attention and appreciating the Ginny/Tom angle.

Hmm...I've thought about writing a Ginny/Tom fic, and it appears in this D/G novel that hasn't really been worked on it a while, despite it being up to around 50 pages now. It's been really hard for me to write them - it was easier to write Ginny on Tom, than Tom on Ginny. I think a big part of that is I'm always hoping for some softness in Tom, some redeemable quality, and he ends up totally out of canon because of it. Like - I want to say he loves her in his own way, but that wouldn't really happen in canon, I don't think.

I think it's fair to say Ginny won't forget Tom - like when Harry first met a dementor on the train, Ginny was the only other one who was strongly affected, and in OotP, Harry says "I forgot" about her being posessed, and she says, "Lucky you." And that all just suggests to me that she's keeping it buried, but it's there, and in a fandom G/T, that would have to be a big thing.

That other G/T you read - how did it turn out? I'm guessing most G/T fics are darkfics, which is something I'm really careful about reading.

Likewise! I've never had such good discussions about HP characters. =)

I still can't really figure why they both mesh so well.

Yeah, I'm definitely not sure about that either. It's odd, because I DO have somewhat clear ideas about the dynamics of their relationship.

Am trying so hard not to be sucked into this ship.

Hee! I know what you mean. I was looking over the Ginny/Sirius fic thread at FAP today, and there are a handful of links but I haven't read any of them yet.

As for Ginny/Tom, I can definitely see how Ginny would be easier to write than Tom. I think Tom might even be harder to write than Voldemort, because he's the step in-between and it's hard to pin down his emotions and beliefs and the motivations behind them. Even so, you'd probably do a good job of characterization - you seem to have an excellent grasp of the characters. *encourages* =D

The other Ginny/Tom I've read is actually not a darkfic at all. It's called the pieces of this puzzle and is written by rubykate. It involves Ginny & a Time-turner, and can be found here. It's NC-17, and started out as very promising. Here's an excerpt:She feels Tom's presence in her mind; sometimes she feels as though he never truly left her. She imagines him standing behind her, his hands on her shoulders, running down her arms, resting on her waist. His lips on her neck, teeth nipping at her bare skin. She shivers, and has to stop herself leaning back into somebody that isn't really there.
I think the idea of Ginny keeping the Tom angst buried is exactly what intrigues me. She was so young when it happened, and I can't imagine it NOT having a profound effect on her. Just having to look back on all her memories of writing in the diary and suddenly having to classify them all as "evil." And of course, I really like the time-turning aspect that Cassie Claire included in DT. That was fascinating.

My thoughts about Ginny & Tom definitely aren't as clear as Ginny/Sirius though. *ponders*

I wonder if there is a G/T ship manifesto? *runs off to check*

(Dude, I love this comment of yours.)

I know this is super late, but - I just had to say that you're right. It's so hard to pin down Tom. It'd be easier if he had some redeemable quality, you know? So far, the only quality I've been able to keep at him is his obsession with Ginny.

Thanks for that excerpt - I really, really liked it. And I totally noticed that I then used that "leaning back" imagery in the Harry and Sirius fic - not sure whether I read it here and channeled it subconciously or what, but I love the word "lean."

One thing I find really interesting about T/G is the obsession factor - Ginny was clearly infatuated with him, and I can't see how she wouldn't have left a mark on Tom as well.

And last thing - what are manifestos? *sheepish* I'm guessing - fansites?

Yeah, I can definitely see that too. They way that they've affected each other is probably what draws me to the pairing most. =)

Ship manifestos are essays that are written with the purpose of... hmm... I'll just paste part of their userinfo here:
Shipper's Manifesto: a public declaration of fannish love for a particular pairing or ship.
[...]
This community's goal is to provide readers with a detailed listing of pairings, insight into the characters behind the pairings, and contextual understanding of what makes the pairing work. This community will also provide newcomers with a starting point for further exploration.

I checked for Ginny/Tom, and alas, there was nothing. ;)

ship_manifesto

But it's a great community - it covers every fandom out there.
