My father worked on an engineering project in Mexicali/Calexico about twenty years ago. I remember being upset that he was going to miss my birthday, but he came up for it. He was only there for a few months, but from everything he described, it seemed like it was another universe, not just down below the border. Scary stuff. We were glued to the news most of Sunday.
