Examination (or rather -ions) is the perfect excuse of why I have been neglecting my journal for a month. The second year exams were killing me and not a minute I spend without a book in my hand!(Exaggerating. I know) LOL. X)
but......
it did not stopped me and my resident movie buddy, Sulina Lauda from hitting the nearest cinema to check out the latest movies and I have promised her to write a movie review ASAP.
So Sulik, this is for you.
Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part I
The movie is so bloody brilliant and I am thankful that the director decided to follow the guidelines of the novel for the final installment of Harry Potter sequels. Although there were some (there were really few actually) lagging scenes here and there, but overall it was fun. I especially adore the illustration of The Deathly Hallows Tale, how they portray the tale in 2D shadowed-characters and the pacing of Hermione as the narrator of the story was appropriate.
Draco’s facial expression in the movie was pure win. What I really like about his character was beneath the evil expression of his and the fact being raised by family of a death eater background, he was devastated by the constant torture from Voldemort and his father trying to earn back the top spot. He showed a very complex character by combining fear, confusion, amused, loyalty and even friendship altogether considering how he was reluctant when Bellatrix asked him to identify Harry Potter whom face had been changed by stinging spell.
Then we have the resident couple, Ron and Hermione (eliminating the fact that Harry and Ginny is also a couple in the story). Ron + Hermione. Need I say more? When Ron wiped the blood on Hermione’s cheek and the way he stared at her when they were playing the piano together, I was literally jump out of excitement in my seat on the cinema! Those two could just...uh...get married already! And I love the significance of the Delluminator given to Ron by Dumbledore because it was the Delluminator that showed him the way to Hermione when he fled due to inevitable frustration on hunting the impossible Horcruxes. Can’t wait for Part II for the kiss!
If only Snape’s on-screen time were much longer, I’m sure I’ll enjoy the movie to the fullest. I have been a fan of him ever since the Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban. He only showed like once during the Death Eater’s meeting with Voldemort and sent his patronus charm to guide Ron and Harry to the real Godric Gryffindor’s sword. It is way too little.
All in all, it was worthy to watch.
My rating: 4.5/5
Sammy’s Adventures
My first impression of this movie was probably just another animation movie to kill time since it’s not from Disney, nor from Pixar. And I was right. Sammy’s Adventure comprised of several strong themes involving humanity, friendship and love which I think a perfect recipe for disaster if it is not well-connected.
Humanity
The story started with Sammy proposed a question to the audience about the importance of human to the animal. Why do they need human? And I expect for the question to be answered during the movie. However, the humanity theme eventually faded and replaced by budding friendship between Sammy and another turtle (for the love of God I don’t remember its name).
Friendship
They stayed together for like 3/4 of the film and it ended with the Sammy’s friend being caught accidentally in a fishermen’s net and unable to escape. And so the friendship theme was left hanging.
Love
Then there was his love of life. Sally came to the story at the early minutes when they met for the first time after they hatched from the eggs and on the way to the sea, Sammy rescued her from the birds. Again, they separated. I don’t know how I stand with the never ending separation cliché in the movie and the cold temperature inside the cinema but I survived. When they met at the middle of the story, Sammy had asked Sally to accompany him to one destination (which I forgot… oh, it’s the Secret Passage) but it was supposed to be like a sacred place for the turtles. Again, due to Sammy’s determination to cross the ship’s engine, Sally got stuck and separated from him. Annoyed much? Yes.
For me the story was a little bit off organization. I rather if they focused of one theme, be it about the human, the friendship or the love. Just pick one and I am sure the story would go fine. Plus, the lack of Sammy’s courage to actually save his friends from the mishap they faced bothered me. Suddenly, the movie finished with Sammy re-united with his best friend and married Sally. Wow in not-so-good way.
However, superb graphics presentation and awesome soundtrack and sound effects make up for the typical storyline. Good for the children but I don’t think an adult will enjoy this movie.
My rating: 2/5 (mainly for the presentation and the songs)
Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Gahoole
It was magic and it was legendary. It’s been long since Warner Bros produced a full-length animation movie and it did not disappoint me at all! I love the characterization in the story where they approach a natural rivalry that might occur when the two brothers have totally opposite behavior and the way they viewed life. In this movie, the clashing opinion happened in the family of owls where Soren was the older brother who believes that love and justice can make world a better place to live. Whereas Kludd, the middle son of the family denied his brother good nature, and claimed that only those who were stronger will be feared and ruled the world. They lived with a parents and a younger sister named Iglentine.
As the story continues, the clashing between the brothers became more obvious as Kludd joined the dark side and Soren travels across the world to find the Lyse of Kiel, the legendary hero that once fought with the evil king. What I like most was the fact that both Soren and Kludd were sincere and determined with the path they chose. Neither of them had turned back and this kept the movie interesting. I personally thought that there was nothing wrong with the path that Kludd had chosen as behind the evil portrayed a glory that he longed searched for, a glory that he could not possibly attained if he lived forever with his brother. He sought for the life that suits him the most and I found it to be aspiring, despite the fact that it turned him into someone bad. It might as well what I put as ‘courage in a wrong way’ but I still admired him.
Later, more emotions came out as they deal with loyalty and betrayal. Another epic that I couldn’t find a word to complete a paragraph on that. It is better to watch the movie to experienced various life-decision making that enveloped the characters.
Legend of the Guardians was a perfect choice to define my idea on the battle between good and evil is eternal, but that does not mean that one cannot do anything to change the outcome. I hope for a sequel and reenactment of the fight between Soren and Kludd.
