Tokyo Recycle Project
The hotly anticipated Tokyo Recycle Project team have arrived in Australia and will take up residence at the Powerhouse Museum for a strictly limited two-week season. A huge hit in New York, Hong Kong and throughout Japan, the Tokyo Recycle Project was launched in 1999 by Masahiro Nakagawa, designer of the popular Japanese streetwear label 20471120, in response to Tokyo's overwhelming consumer culture.
Instead of creating new garments from scratch, Nakagawa and his team of recyclers breathe new life into old and worn garments. He and his team interview project participants about the memories associated with their fashion cast-offs, before transforming them into exciting new creations ranging from street-wear to couture. As well as critiquing fashion and consumerism, the project seeks to resucitate meaning between people and their possessions.
Tokyo Recycle has proven hugely popular with Sydney’s fashion set and places within the project have sold out. However, you can still take part in this unique creative experience. Watch Nakagawa and his team of fashion recyclers at work in the Museum and chat with them at special sessions held daily, plus, don’t miss the spectacular fashion parade which will showcase their inspired creations.
