I Could Use Somebody
jongkey; angst; PG-13
Jonghyun comes late into dance practice at 11 o'clock when it slipped his mind that it actually started at 9. He runs in, excuses and all, as he drops his backpack next to a pile of jugs and towelettes. The members and the choreographers stop and look at him, shaking their heads and go back to work, as if Jonghyun's tardy situation had never happened. Jonghyun takes his place beside Kibum and gets a little lost in the dance, but eventually remembers when he turns his head to Onew and Minho.
"What happened?" Kibum whispers as he hits Jonghyun's toned wrist against his pale one.
Jonghyun only smiles like a teenage girl. "Sekyung noona." he responds, following Kibum's moves into the dance.
Kibum can only respond by his lips, forming a small 'o' and no longer speaking. He avoids eye-contact with Jonghyun the whole practice and once the dance is done, he lies down on the wooden floor clutching his pink jug, panting and sweating. The other four sit around him, taking their respective phones and jugs.
"Jonghyun, where have you been?" One of the choreographers asks the vocalist from afar, arms crossed over his chest.
Kibum can see, from his well-used peripheral vision, that Jonghyun's lips twist, purse and tighten, like he doesn't know what to answer. Simply because Jonghyun doesn't want anyone to know, absolutely no one (except Kibum) that he's dating. He was scared if anyone did know and so was Kibum; moreover, Kibum was scared that Jonghyun might forget him. He sits up quickly and pats his best friend on the back. "He overslept. Very deep sleeper, you know. Slept through fireworks once."
The choreographer just rolls his eyes. "Just don't do that again. You know how tardiness is tolerated here, Jonghyun."
"Yes, I do," Jonghyun replies, smiles then says, "I guess no more late-night selcas, huh, Kibum-ah?"
The rapper responds with a smile for a facade. Fear, betrayal, disappointment, frustration and jealousy were all the things that threatened to break that smile, bubbling in Kibum's heart. Kibum was scared for both of them, the fans' responses and the reputation and unity of SHINee-- he didn't want the whole John-Lennon-Yoko-Ono thing to happen to their group, to their strong friendship. Disappointed, no less, in himself. Why did he feel so uncomfortable around him? He should be a better friend and be happy, or at least try to.
What Kibum really wants to do is throw Jonghyun's annoying cellphone out the window since it's the only thing he's been touching ever since a month ago. And it's stupid how Jonghyun smiles, blushes over a girl Kibum tells himself. But in reality, the same thing happens to me when I'm around you. He hates how he starts lying (an action he despises the most in this world) for Jonghyun, all for the sake of friendship, everyone thinks but it's really because this is how I'm starting to accept what you're doing.
That night, Kibum simply lays down on his bed, stares at the ceiling and thinks about how incredibly ridiculous it is to fall for someone, how he solely knows what the line is between admiration and love.
Maybe he could just use somebody.
Somebody like Jonghyun.
