Today while waiting for the bus I met the cutest little old lady today.
She was a chatty one. Had just bought a new study bible and told everyone about. So, rather than ignore her, I decided to talk with her, and she blessed my day. We talked up concordances, Jesus, and bible stories we liked, my going to college, and art (especially colors) until she turned to me and asked honestly.
"So why don't you become a nun? Especially if you love Scripture so much"
That's actually not the first time I've been asked that. My dad once told me I had a nun's temperment, to which I instantly started daydreaming about slapping little kids' knuckles with a huge wooden ruler. haha, no.
And my inner response went something like this: "Because I'm living in sin and loving it. (Sinning very boldly, indeed) Because there's more to my mysticism than Christ, because I'm called to get married and have babies someday (because I really do.....dream about being a stay-at-home mum)........"
My actual response: "I've actually thought about it. I don't know......." Which was true. I admire the courage of nuns and women who step into a ministry that might limit them to behind-the-scenes. Because to spread Grace behind-the-scenes of life is courage abd love on the deepest of levels.
I actually asked a nun once what she thought the best part of being a nun was. "Being a bride of Christ," was he reply, while she had a huge smile on her face, and showed me the ring she wore to symbolize that. Just. Wow. What faith. She radiated Joy.
So back to the little kind old lady. Perfect stranger. Refused to let the bus ride be boring and quiet. She got everyone around her talking and by the end, I met a family who lived up the street to me.
Blessings come mysteriously like that. In little old ladies with nothing better to do than annoy everyone around her until we all make new friends. :-D
