I met a strange cat today, whose steely gray eyes gave nothing away.
I'd seen him before, padding through my overgrown garden, and never had the priviledge of making his acquaintance. That is, until this evening during one of my many "breaks". He had come down from the neighbors fence and was about to dash off, but stopped when I said "hello".
He sat tall and calm, lazily curling his tail back and forth, avoiding the tall weeds of course. Obviously undaunted by my presence he glared curiously at me, as if he'd never seen such a silly person in all of his many lives.
"Hi there" I said again, as if he would actually respond.
Without moving he mewed politely but continued to stare and ever so slightly smirk. I thought 'Mr. Darcy' a very appropriate name for this cat and even told him so (with as much pomp and sass as I could muster). He blinked.
I took a step closer to him and was almost afraid that he would run away. But he didn't; he stretched and yawned and took a step closer to ME. I took a step, he took a step. And once we were close enough I slowly presented him with my hand. He ceremoniously nodded and I scratched his whiskers gently. This went on for a bit and he mewed a little. But then, as if he'd suddenly remembered his place, he turned slowly on his heel and began to walk away.
"Nice to meet you" I said. He turned on his way back to the fence and stared at me for an eternity before disappearing into the neighbors yard.
