Apple Hill House Chronicles: Shadows
James blocked the sun from his eyes as he stepped outside. Last night was so tiring.
After Arcanine left, Jiro watched for awhile as Renee and James tried to play a game of poker with a stacked deck of low cards Jiro slipped into their bag a while ago. But as Jiro went to into his room from the common room, James could see him looking worried. James knew Jiro since childhood and knew the way he looked during each emotion even if no one else knew. Jiro was the second best friend he could have.
“Oy...” Renee’s voice came from behind, “Is Ji coming?”
“No.” James says rubbing his eyes, “He’s letting us go on our own this time...just to tie up loose ends. Then we leave for the Traning Coast....
“Nuh?” Renee said. The nuh turned into a large yawn.
James pointed to Jiro’s window, the shutters were shut.
“He’s planning.” James said slowly.
“Ugh....” Renee said groaning.
James smiled a little.
“Let’s go.”
---------------------------------------------------------
Jiro sat watching the map before him. Red and blue pins moved over the map, but what was different on this map than the ones other commanders had, were other different pins on them. Along with the blue and red pins black ones moved in the tree lines, and hidden paths and green ones sat still in the northeast corner. Jiro knew all the movements of every person in the area. It was his job to know.....
“Master...” a man’s voice said next to him.
Jiro turned and saw Mai’s human form in the doorway.
“I need you to go scout the road ahead of us Mai.” Jiro said looking back to the map, “I thank you for this.”
Mai looked at him for a moment.
“Master...” he said slowly.
Jiro smiled.
“I know you hate your human form,” Jiro turned to him smiling, “That’s why my thanks is unrivaled...”
“It’s not that Master....” Mai said closing his eyes and hanging his head, “Do you not have any letters for Ms. Fuu this week?”
Jiro stared at him.
“No.” Jiro said turning back to the map, “To me....Fuu not being sad makes me happy........and finding Azu and Anya....will make me the happiest man in the world.”
“Master?” Mai said confused.
Jiro shook his head.
“Go Mai...report back when we get to Dead Tree Wood.”
Mai bowed, and turned out of Jiro’s bedroom.
Jiro sighed and closed his eyes hanging his head.
“Finding those Ladies....” he said sadly, “Will save Fuu one of the worst pains in the world....”
---------------------------------------------------------
Two nights later....
---------------------------------------------------------
“I have the Yamoto’s movements...it seems keeping to the paths you have taken haven’t effected their movement.” Mai reported to Jiro. “They are all heading to Nelana...”
Jiro stabbed the ground with his knife.
“Damm...” James said rubbing his forehead.
“Errr....” Renee agreed with the others.
“Thanks Mai.” Jiro said after a while, “Continue your assignment.”
Mai bowed and jumped into the trees.
Jiro sighed and stood up. He went to the fire.
The Yamoto’s were still forcing the royal forces into Nelana. Jiro cursed loudly and started hitting a log with his sword.
“JIRO!” James shouted running to him.
Jiro slammed his sword into the ground and fell to his knees. He gritted his teeth and closed his eyes. What the hell were the Yamoto’s trying to do sending the royal forces into Nelana? It’s not like they were at war with each other....the queen of the United Courts was the empress of Nelana for Christ’s sake! All of Jiro’s informants were silent...all his men stationed around the clan quiet. Jiro was irritated.
He looked into the fire silently and felt James’s hand on his shoulder.
“Why the hell was I chosen for this job?” Jiro said placing his face in his hands.
James looked to Renee. Renee lowered her head. It was them who pushed Commander Drake to have Jiro take Roger’s place. They both wanted him to take the job because he was just as intelligent as Roger, and both knew...Roger would have chosen Jiro to succeed him.
“We have to get up early tomorrow.” Renee said breaking away from James’s stare, “Let’s get to bed.”
--------------------------------------
The next day, the trio had put Jiro’s outburst behind them, and were very fortunate that by noon, they found a waterfall that formed a nice small pool and stream. Deciding that it was a good place to have lunch, they were sitting on the banks of the pool like sunning seals, enjoying a break form their travels.
“I really wish we didn’t have to go soon.” Renee complained as she finished her tea, “This place is so wonderful.”
Jiro smiled. It brought back memories of home when they found places like this in their travels. He too was sad that they had to leave as soon as tea was finished.
Jiro went over to the pool and splashed some water on his face and took his handkerchief out and wiped his face clean.
“You know,” James said as he set his empty cup down, “You’re just gonna get dirty as soon as we start off again.”
“I just felt like it.” Jiro said shooting a very fierce, yet joking look at James.
“~Oy!~ Wait a moment!” Renee exclaimed suddenly. She placed her cup on a nearby rock and hopped over to Jiro, “That’s a woman’s handkerchief!”
Jiro narrowed his eyes and quickly shoved it into his robe. He stood up and turned away.
“Come on now!” Renee said tugging at his cloak trying to open it, but Jiro had his hands tightly clenched on the front of the cloak.
“Let go Renee!” James yelled trying hard not to laugh.
This encouraged Renee to keep tugging, until finally Jiro stepped back and let her fall over. This of course caused James to erupt into laughter.
“If you must know, “Jiro said straitening his robes, “it was a gift.”
“I know who gave it to him!” said James standing and coming over to Jiro. He grabs Jiro around the neck.
“You don’t know her.” Jiro said escaping James’s clutches.
“Yeah. Right.” James said with a sly smile
Jiro sulked.
“Let’s go now.”
They packed up their things and started off, James and Renee laughing at Jiro.
Jiro didn’t care. He stopped and looked back at the waterfall and pool.
“Well,” he thought, “You know of her....you’ve just never met her.”
Jiro turned back towards Renee and James, and continued on, his thoughts on Fuu.
Apple Hill House Chronicles: Earth's Whisper
“CREEK...”
Fuu opened her locker in the girl’s locker room. She usually liked that sound when she was in the locker room alone. Usually.
It was five fifty in the morning and she was there for morning practice before her archery team actually showed up. Because she was team captain she was given a key to the locker room for her own personal use. It took her two years of trust to get the key, and impeccable standings for the archery team. She lead her team to victory for three years, the first year she was just a “beginner” and could not reach the rank of captain.
But today, as she pulled her traditional archery kimono*, from her locker, her mind still weighed heavily on many feelings she had... But that’s why she was here an hour early. She wanted to practice the traditional way.
She closed her eyes and mumbled a few words and was dressed in her clothes. No one but her would see them thanks to a recent spell she learned. She took her bow and quiver and shut the locker door.
“Remember Fuu.....” said Apple’s voice from Fuu’s childhood, “Every weapon...not just the bow and arrow....not just the sword....they all require grace to use....skill is only learned.”
Fuu smiled as she reached the archery hall.
She remembered Apple giving her a bow and arrow to use, and her watchful and maternal presence as Fuu would mess up, and yet try again.... Fuu remembered everything Apple said...and she would never forget. Fuu would never forget anything Apple taught her, and closed her eyes as she pulled the string back.
“Fuu....” said his voice.
Fuu moved the bow slightly as she let the arrow go, and missed the target completely. Fuu narrowed her eyes and pressed her lips. Like her in her childhood, she cocked another arrow and took aim again. Today’s practice was gonna be long and hard....
------------------------
Fuu ran all up the stairs quickly. She didn’t even change out of her archery clothes since the Japanese Culture Club was to have already started. They didn’t mind her being late since she was a great president.
As she rounded the corner, she caught a glimpse out the window and saw the Dean of Cultural Study walking across the lawn with two other men. Fuu stopped running and looked down at them. One of the other men was a short old man with a thin mustache and thin rimed circle glasses. Fuu recognized the chair of the Japanese department and knew immediately who the unknown third man was.
Fuu noticed the distance the men had till they entered the building and took to running the last flight up the stairs.
The whole club clapped as she threw herself into the room, slamming the door shut.
“Sonoda-sensei is coming!!” she yelled breathlessly.
The members stopped clapping and knew what they had to do.
For the past month they had no advisor for the club, and basically Fuu let the anime fans hold “meetings” in the Japanese Culture Club time. Needless to say, they got a little careless...
The majority of the male members (who had secluded themselves behind a folding screen that Fuu made them use...) moved the fan to the side, and were picking up strewn doujinshi and unfinished models. The girls were throwing their cosplay supplies into what looked like an antique trunk, but was really just made to look like one, and shoving it to the supply room.
As Fuu caught her breath the vice president, Cindy, came and stood by her.
“A little late are we?” she said smiling and patting her back slowly.
Fuu didn’t say anything. She was really trying to concentrate and use a spell quietly. She closed her eyes and saw the three men opening the doors to the building. Fuu opened her eyes and saw the clean up was actually almost done.
“Say,” Cindy said happily, “Nice uniform Fuu-kaichou.”
“Tojikomeru**....baka....,” Fuu said looking at her clothes, “Damm.”
She looked around and saw the door to the store room. She ran over to it and closed it. She locked the door and was still for a moment. She could not transform into her uniform because she had forgotten the spell to it. It was a little more complicated that the one she cast this morning.
Fuu closed her eyes in resolve. She removed the hiding spell on her archery gear. She placed her bow and quiver in the room, and unlocked the door.
As she stepped out, a student ran into the room. The others knew that the Dean’s would be here in moments, so they stood at attention in front of the long desks. Fuu shut the door to the store closet slowly and walked up to the front of the room to the main desk The door to the room opened and the two men from outside stepped in, followed by the third.
Sonoda-sensei looked at Fuu for a moment with his eyebrow raised slightly. Fuu closed her eyes. She would be talked to later about the attire.
Fuu bowed as the men reached her on the other side of the desk.
“Welcome sirs.” Fuu said.
“Welcome.” came a chorus of the other’s voices as they too bowed.
“Impeccable Shiba-kaichou” Mr. Sonoda said bowing in return. The strange man behind him bowed too. Fuu narrowed her eyes a bit, but paid attention to the Dean's as they turned around to the club.
“We have found you a new advisor for this club.” Said the Dean of Cultural Study gesturing to the third unknown man, “His name is Mr. Timothy Tallon.”
The man bowed to the club, then turned and bowed to Fuu and the club board.
“I want to say, that I hope to guide this club with the wisdom I have.” The man said with an English accent, “I hope to see that the club carries on the fine Japanese traditions.”
Fuu said nothing. Something bothered her. She bowed shortly back to him. She heard a small cough from Sonoda-sensei, and quickly stood up.
“Thank you.” She said coolly, “Would you like to begin today?”
“Thank you Kaichou.” Mr. Tallon said, “That would be nice.”
Fuu motioned to the advisors chair at the end of the table. As the man moved to take his chair, the Dean’s bowed and then left.
“I’ll see you later Shiba-kun about the attire?” Sonoda-sensei asked leaving.
Fuu groaned.
“Hai, Sensei.
