http://www.nytimes.com/2011/04/20/sports/othersports/20waitz.html This morning, I woke to the news radio reporting Grete Waitz's death after a six-year battle with cancer. She was 57.
In the late 1970s and early 1980s, I remember hearing about this blonde lady with the Norwegian accent doing this "crazy" thing called a marathon. At the time, I still had not yet gotten over the personal unease (despite intellectual acceptance) that it is okay for a woman to be fit and active and compete in (what is often perceived to be) men's sports. My personal and emotional life has changed a lot since then and I'm glad that I had heard of Waitz back then and recognize what an incredible role model and icon she truly is.
I have been rather sober today, but she's also an inspiration to get up and go.
