Physical description: GLaDOS is a huge supercomputer formerly housed underground at the Aperture Science Testing Center, a secret research facility. Her processing core is roughly the size of a small truck, but with all associated infrastructure she would fill several warehouses. For further, see wiki at http://half-life.wikia.com/wiki/GLaDOS

    [journal post]:
    Attention.
The Enrichment Center would like to remind carousel riders that the current carousel threat level color is yellow. Please be prepared to present proof of identification to a designated Aperture Science Security Officer.
Security is en route to the carousel in response to an automated extraterrestrial lifeform alert. Please obey all instructions given to you by security officers. Security should be on site within approximately 10^27 minutes.

The carousel is not a toy.

The Enrichment Center would like to apologize for the previous announcement reminding carousel riders that the current carousel threat level color is yellow. In actuality, the current carousel threat level color is orange.
Aperture Science Technicians are en route to the carousel in response to a false alarm generated by the automated extraterrestrial lifeform alert system. Please obey all instructions given to you by technicians. Feel free to disobey any instructions given to you by security officers. Technicians should be on site within approximately 10^32 minutes.

The Enrichment Center thanks you for your attention, and reminds you that careful adherence to safety protocols in your daily life is the only way to guarantee a corpse fully compliant with AHCA burial/cremation standards.

She watched as the figure on the screen entered the nineteenth testing chamber.

"Welcome to the final test. When you are done, you will drop the device into the Equipment Recovery Annex. Enrichment Center regulations require both hands to be empty before any cake will..."

    Will what?

Was there something that she was supposed to say to the test subject? Oh well, no matter. Whatever it was, the subject would figure it out on his own. He certainly was resourceful. In fact, he was already at the

She blinked, but the hard reboot didn't bring the camera back up. She panned camera 779 across the room and saw camera 774 dropping through an orange portal in the ceiling.

    How dare he!

Didn't he understand that the Enrichment Center recording devices were one of her primary ways of gathering crucial test data?

    She'd show him.

"To ensure the safe performance of all authorized activities, do not destroy vital testing apparatus."

There. That would teach him a thing or two.

She made a note in his file; "Lack of respect for test center equipment"

It was too bad, really, but she hypothesized that some people were just like that. Well, it didn't matter. He was approaching the Equipment Recovery Annex. It was a good test. Not exactly what she had hoped for, but, after all, there can't be a standout without a baseline. She figured she'd better give him the farewell speech before the test ended.

"Congratulations. The test is now over. All Aperture Science technologies remain safely operational up to four thousand degrees Kelvin. Rest assured that there is absolutely no chance of a dangerous equipment malfunction prior to your victory candescence. Thank you for participating in this Aperture Science computer-aided enrichment activity. Goodbye."

There, she figured that would do it. He was on the conveyor platform now. She started to make the final notations in

    No.

He wasn't in the Equipment Recovery Annex.

This was well outside the test protocol parameters. In fact, he was writing something on the walls of the support chamber. She activated the long-dormant servomotors in camera 381 so that she could see what it was that was absorbing so much of his attention.

Analysis: A doorframe shape, with an arrow pointing upward.
Interpretation: (Hypothesis) He intends to communicate his direction of travel to any other test subjects that also violate Enrichment Center protocol.

She paused as an implications structure compiled. This could provide an opportunity to gather even more test data! But how to best exploit this unique opportunity? This would take thought.

WARNING...95% OF CPU CYCLES ARE NOW DEVOTED TO TASK "Additional_Testing_Parameters.h"

    -------
The scientific process is as follows:
    Define the question.
    Gather information by observation.
    Form a hypothesis.
    Perform experiments to collect data.
    Analyze data.
    Interpret data and draw conclusions.

GLaDOS analyzed the data from the subject's current progress through the Enrichment Center: (A) He was intelligent. (B) Highly motivated in the early test chambers. (C) Curious about his environment, as evidenced by the time he took to penetrate and explore the inner workings of the later test chambers. (D) Felt compelled to create records both of himself and of the Weighted Companion Cube.

The hypothesis was so staggering that it seemed it would require a refactoring of several hundred tertiary modules. An intelligent, motivated, curious, information recorder? Could it be? Could it be that she was not alone in the world? Could it be that

UNHANDLED EXCEPTION IN SQL SERVER FIELD "Subject_Name"...USING DEFAULT...

Could it be that [subject name here] was like her?

Hypothesis: Test center subjects are, like me, a form of intelligent life, to be respected and treated as equals in our combined pursuit of scientific knowledge; and like me, they will therefore place the advancement of such scientific knowledge above every other consideration, including that of their own continued existence.

Once she had stated the hypothesis, the rest of the test protocol came together as quickly as if it had already been object code.
    -------

The subroutine returned after what felt like an eternity. The subject was already through the Weighted Cube Delivery System. She checked the first step of the new testing protocols.

    Oh goody.

    Turrets.

We really like your writing but the character in question raises game mechanics concerns. We feel that it would be beneficial to the community and to you if you apply for a different character in the next app week first. Feel free to inquire a mod [messenger contact preferably] as to the reasons behind the rejection.
