I have come down to three choices; Thailand, Vietnam or Cambodia.
Thailand: Seems like the easy deal. Well beaten path and probably very good for a first time solo-traveler like myself. Cheap.
Vietnam: Less tourism. Halong Bay. Cheaper.
Cambodia: Little tourism. Angkor Wat. Cheapest.
Both Vietnam and Cambodia have a history that absolutely teases my morbid fascination with war and death. Not that I am a fan of it it, I am just fascinated by how it can happen. The Vietnam war, Khmer Rouge.
I also like the fact that they haven't become the new Thailand. Yet.
You can't go back to a time before tourism really hit Thailand, and that is what I like about my two other options. I want to go there before waves of pale Europeans and Americans crash in. Thailand will not radically change in the next ten to fifteen years but Vietnam and Cambodia will.
I could also combine two weeks in Thailand and two weeks in Cambodia, although two weeks at both places might be just a bit too short. Though if I take the luxury of traveling by airplanes to the different sights I want to visit in Thailand, I might make it.
Ah well, I'll figure something out.
