Imphal, Loktak and Sendra

Aug 27, 2004 01:06

The recent happenings in Manipur have saddened me quite a bit. Here is praying for peace in the North East that I love so much.

Sekmai Yu (Well, this alcoholic beverage made at a place called Sekmai figures on the top of my favorites list. Yu means water in Manipuri), Tabhal Chongba (the mass group dance during Holi, in which young couples participate), Moreh, Chikkies in Burma, Loktak, Sendra, the trek on Keibul lamjo national park hill and the (naturally) sweet brown rice that you can make use to make brown kheer ... all these from my trip to Manipur are something that I can never forget. Sreedhar, Arun Singh, Bhargava and I went to Imphal during a Holi vacation on Hitesh and Navin's invitation in 2000.

NOTE: each of the medium sized pictures that you will get to if you click on the thumbnails is about 75 KB.

The picture of the Hotel (look closely) was taken on the out-skirts of Imphal and the picture of the natural floating islands in the blue waters of the Loktak lake was taken from atop the Sendra island-hill. Both the pictures have few 'scratches' on them because they were printed from film that was in the archives and then scanned.

This lake is like a miniature inland sea lying 48 km. from Imphal. From the Tourist Bungalow, set atop Sendra island, visitors can get a bird's eye view of the lake and the life on it. The fisherman and their families live in neat huts on its shores and make full use of their environment. They cast their nets on it, rear fish farms in it using the nets as floating walls, harvest it for the water chestnut known as Heikak, and even build their houses on the islands of floating weed that dart around the lake.

These pictures are dedicated to the beautiful people of Manipur. The hotel is probably a mirror of the simplicity and innocence of the people who at their heart are as beautiful as the Loktak lake itself, probably just more ...

For those among you who do not know, the sport polo was invented in Manipur.
