For what it's worth... I try to keep this journal on topic (about HIV/AIDS and such) as possible, but every now and then something of equal importance shows up on my doorstep and I cannot choose silence or selective posting (only posting in my personal journal).
A beautiful thing is about to be taken away from the people that created and nurtured it -
If you have a moment, please stop over to
The South Central Farm website and look around.
Essentially - back in the day, about 10 years or so ago, L.A. gave this 14-acre piece of land up for community farming. It was a project in conjunction with a food bank. The land was divided into 360 plots and is the largest 'urban gardens' in the country. Check out
this page for the nitty gritty details and history.
L.A. has done some shady stuff, but the whole deal is pretty sour. Now, after 10 years, the original owner(s) are taking it back and essentially kicking these 350 families off the land that they helped transform from a dump to a thriving garden/farm.
Tonight police are allowed to remove 'trespassers' (protesters) by force and eviction is eminent. A few people including Darryl Hanna, Joan Baez, and Julia Butterfly are arranging a sit-in in the trees. I don't exactly know what could be done at this point other than pray for a miracle.
They're also accepting tax-deductible donations to try to buy back their land. I'm sure every little bit helps, and if they aren't successful - the money will be returned.
Thanks -
Hope everyone is doing well
*much love
