Deer in my neighborhood have always been a bit of an omen for me. Tonight, as I was coming home, six stunning deer were on the move down my street. I quickly shut off the lights and parked, not wanting to spook them. Not only did I succeed in not spooking them, they walked past me. Even from a couple of feet away, I was (as I always am) stunned by the strength and grace of these creatures. I watched them as the small herd strode past for maybe twenty minutes, until they vanished off the road and into some bushes leaving me standing there alone surrounded by their hoofprints in the snow.
For some reason, a Swans lyric leapt to mind:
And we steal our experience from an object that suffers
But the brightest pain leaves a shadow on no one
Time for bed.
