I was trying to prove the point that Americans spend a shitload of time at work by doing the following math. Granted, a great deal of our time is spent sleeping, showering, and eating...but still, about 18% of an average American's year in 2007 was spent at work. That really doesn't sound like all that much, really . . .
Math:
The Bureau of Labor’s American Time Use Survey of 2007 concluded that Americans spent 4.37 hours per day at work throughout the year. This average included data from employed and unemployed individuals and does not exclude holidays. In order to reach the number of hours an average American worked during the year, I multiplied 4.37 (the average hours worked per day) times 365.242199 (the number of days in one year) to yield 1596.10841 (the average number of hours worked per year by an American citizen).
To determine the percentage of time an average American spends at work out of each year, I did the following: I multiplied 24 (the number of hours in one day) times 365.242199 (the number of days in one year) to yield 8765.81278 (the number of hours in one year). Thus, an average American spends 1596.10841 hours at work each year out of the total 8765.81278 hours in each year. I then multiplied 1596.10841 (the hours worked by an average American as determined above) times 100 (to determine a percentage) and divided that result, 159610.841, by 8765.81278 (the number of hours in one year) to yield the result of 18.2083333 (average percent of time in the year than an American spent at work).
