Rapunzel ran down the streets, trying to keep her masses of hair from dragging on the ground. She knew there was going to be blood and gore in her hair, but she didn’t care. She was too busy trying to outrun the hordes of angry zombies trying to tear her apart. She gasped, double-checking that Flynn was still right along with her.
Her heart pounded in her chest. She didn’t think she’s ever find somewhere safe. Just when she was getting ready to give up, she felt herself pulled into a building. She let out a muffled scream as she fell into a room.
“Hey, quiet down. You don’t want to go alerting all the zombies that we’re in here, okay?”
Rapunzel looked at the man, wide eyed. There were four others here that still seemed to be human. “What’s going on out there? What happened to all of those people?”
“Far as anyone can tell, they’ve succumbed to the virus. We don’t know if there’s a cure, but we’re trying to make our way out of here. By the way, I’m Louis, that’s Bill, that’s Zoey, and over there you’ve got Francis. I wish we could have met under better circumstances, but I guess you gotta take what you get.” Louis gestured to everyone as he went around.
“It’s nice to meet all of you. I’m Rapunzel and this is Flynn. We’re…kind of new to this whole thing.”
She could still hear the zombies zooming about the streets. A distant pounding hammered at her nerves. How long could they stay safe in here? She just wanted to be back up in her tower, safe and sound from all these attacking monsters.
She heard someone coughing and instantly went on high alert. She’d heard that noise chasing them as they ran. She wasn’t so sure it was human anymore. Judging from the way the others picked up their weapons, she knew she was right. With steely resolve she grabbed the nearest weapon.
A brief flash of happiness went through her as she realized it was a frying pan. She knew how to use one of those. Maybe she wouldn’t be so useless after all. Feeling pleased with the turn of events, she turned back to her new found companions and smiled.
Then, too fast for any of them to react, something wrapped around Louis, dragging him out the window. A frown pulled at her lips. He was too far away for her to save him with a frying pan. It’d be stupid to run out into the streets after him. Not when there were still so many zombies out there.
The other teammates shot at the zombie holding their friend captive. Their attention was turned elsewhere as their safe spot was discovered. Zombies began pouring into the room. She stifled a scream, holding the frying pan in front of her.
The others moved in front, protecting her. She was near the window. From the corner of her eye, she could see the smoker slowly choking Louis. She narrowed her eyes, her face growing determined. Grabbing the end of her hair, she prepared to give it a good throw. She could do this.
She tossed her hair across the way, making a small noise of triumph as it wrapped around the special infected. She knew light would draw more zombies to them, but they already had a horde. Out of options and running out of time, she began to sing. “Flower gleam and glow…”
Light started at her scalp, slowly traveling the length of her very long hair. She continued to sing, her song filling the room softly. Blood splattered around her, but she stayed focus. She wasn’t going to lose Louis. Not after she just met him.
Once her song was over, she popped one eye lid open. Sure enough, there was now a very confused man wrapped in her hair. Looking at the ground, she saw Louis had fallen. Zombies were closing in around him, but he was fending them off. The room was now clear and the group moved to the streets. Francis and Bill provided cover fire, taking out the zombies surrounding Louis. Zoey moved to help him.
Once he was standing, he turned to smile at everyone. “Thanks, guys. I knew I could count on you.”
Rapunzel beamed widely. She knew she was included in that. See, Mother. I’m stronger than you think I am.
