I definitely see Kara pre and post Maelstrom differently as well. I think the most heartbreaking thought is that the real Kara did die there and like in this story, something/one else comes back in her place to finish the job for her, like she's a conduit of sorts. Which means that Kara did go to her death in such turmoil (despite the "peace" we saw her reach in order to get her to kill herself) and she, nor anyone else, ever had that closure with the real version, just whatever it was that returned in her place.
So this little story was my looking at it where the post-Kara slowly starts to realize the truth and the details of her mission come back to her the closer she gets. She gets conflicted, feels everything Kara felt, but is torn in knowing it doesn't really belong to her (even if she selfishly and curiously indulges a little to keep the memory for herself). But when she has to leave, she at least recognizes that Pre-Kara wasn't yet done and she's still needed there, and resolves to fix that if she can.
It's a little-spiritual, I suppose, although the how's and what's were less important here in comparison to the sentiment of it (and I just could not leave Lee wallowing in a field on his own).
