Obama spoke at Beloit last night. I waited for a good 2 1/2 hours, and was probably 25 feet from where he was speaking. I have my doubts about him, but I'm sure as hell voting for him. Man, the energy in the place was electric. Outside of like, amusement parks, I don't think I've ever seen a crowd that diverse in terms of age, class and race. There were a lot of us young'uns, but also a lot of elderly people, families, people in fatigues etc. I've heard the energy around his campaign compared to Kennedy more times than I can count, and last night I could really see why. He's idealistic, sure. He talks big talk, but he certainly talks it well. It was just so relieving to hear a mainstream presidential candidate talk about things like using civil service to reduce college debts and the creation of "green-collar jobs" (I love that term). He even used a great Kennedy quote -- "We should never negotiate out of fear, or fear negotiating."
Yeah, I mean, it's a lot of rhetoric, and he might overuse the words "hope" and "change" but so what? I think the thing that impressed me most was his insistence on grassroots change. I even caught myself loudly saying "Yeah!" a few times during his speech. I have caught the Obama fever, I suppose.
GO VOTE.
