even though i have tomorrow off, i should probably be sleeping....
i've been writing some new songs for the up-coming halloween show. prior to this it's been a whole three years since i've written any music. i'm very thankful that the whole process has become second nature once i start (i'm refusing to give into the riding a bike analogy). basically what i do is freak out that i won't remember a damn thing, and then when i turn my keyboard on everything comes flooding back. "muscle-memory"? maybe....
the first new song is about 90% done. it's equal parts creepy and catchy, which is fantastic.
i find that writing music and making art is fairly similar. it starts with a vague emotion or feeling, and kind of evolves from there. perhaps some of it is subconscious, but i'm no expert.
take the second new song, for instance, which i've been working on tonight. it kicks in with this gloomy piano melody, and after several measures it combines with a sort of break-beat, trip-hop drum beat. it's the eclectic feel i was hoping for, and even though i've had some ideas as far as the movement of the piece (i usually ignore the verse-chorus-verse structure), i wonder how it will evolve....
