More flashback than update

Apr 30, 2007 01:05

I'm backdating this post because I can't believe I went the whole of April without blogging about the apocalypse, which, btw, appears to be over. Technically, convocation's in June, the whole cap-and-gown business and all that jazz, so more musings on graduation TK (as I attempt once more to come up with another four-year plan for my life haha)... but yeah. Another Hellmouth conquered. We saved the world again. Or did we? I still feel as utterly discombobulated as I did in 2003. "Where do we go from here?" Buffy resonates as strongly as ever... but more on that another day.

There's been an apocalypse to deal with, after all. When I went back on campus after, what, a week away, it seemed like things were already changing while my back was turned. The Metropolis complex they've been building for what seems like my entire stint on the Hellmouth actually has walls now. The covered walkway is starting to resemble a normal sidewalk. The used bookstore has a new sign. When did these things happen? Why was my approval not sought? It hasn't been that long since that crazy, careening last week of school which jumped all over the place, from the brutal media ethics exam (which I bullshat to the best of my ability... it was the law component that made me cry a little inside) to a stressful day at work with the power going out five minutes before closing (so we had to do circ manually, copying out barcodes by hand). In between, I also shelled out a total of $200: a) to see Loreena McKennitt play Massey Hall, and b) for the RRJ launch party, aka my high school prom.

Loreena was, naturally, amazing. She's currently on her Ancient Muse tour (her first album in a decade) and the stage was all decked out like the CD cover, complete with hanging lanterns. I was in the seventh row (completely skewing her fan demographic, I might add lol) and I was transfixed. The nine-member band was phenomenal and diversely talented with instruments from the hurdy gurdy to the oud. (Hugh Marsh rocked the violin. It literally took my breath away.) Loreena herself was on piano, harp and accordion. My favourite part of the evening was when she introduced "The Old Ways" by talking about her time in the Irish country, and I thought she was going to play something different, but then she mentioned the idea of home and launched right into the song and I'm like OMG LOVE. Another goosebump-inducing moment was when the violin and the cello twined for the closing notes of "The Highwayman." I first heard this song when I was 13, and it's still so, so heartbreakingly beautiful. I would also have liked to hear "All Souls Night" or "Standing Stones" live, but I was pretty satisfied with the set list.

On the RRJ launch at Li'ly: I liken it to prom night the same way I liken J-School to HS. And I mean that as a good thing. The magazines looked good, the mastheads looked good, and everyone was in a happy haze (unfortunately, nobody got hired or wasted that I heard). We were supposed to mingle with the supposedly VIP guests, but who wants to network when you can be catching up with long-lost 'Sonian pals, taking pictures of yourself in the mirror (or jumping, or posing with Ann's cleavage), and wandering down dark alleys with your fellow HoR looking for an elusive car? For the afterparty, we went to Andy Poolhall (which really wasn't as cool as I imagined it to be), and enjoyed each other's company immensely, and spent our last hours as a family together.

As for the book we mag kids poured our lifeblood into, you can pick it up on our Hellmouth, or you can get it on newsstands later this summer.

Some linkspam:

Cate + Clive = :))) ...Elizabeth: The Golden Age teaser!

Polanski's Pompeii!

Sienna replaces Lindsay in Dylan Thomas movie. Better, but I'm still not that impressed. Although the tabloids have been saying that Keira loves Cillian. Bwahaha.

Lovely Atonement trailer.

Julia Stiles to star in a happy Bell Jar. Um, okay.

HP5 trailer. Meanwhile, librarians swear a vow of secrecy or something, re: the last book. I wish I had that kind of security clearance. Hahaha.

Patrick Wolf is not quitting music, bless him.

GRRM is hard at work.

I need to sleep. There's more TK, I promise. I've been away from this blog too long, and you know what they say about stories: if you've got one in you, it's gotta come out.

COMING SOON: an existential Hellmouth retrospective, J-School Greatest Hits, musings on Angel and apocalypses, and a possible picspam post!

keira, hp, music, grrm, j-skool
