Office #5, Saturday Afternoon

Sep 29, 2012 10:32

Jono was going to be doing some schedule shuffling this week, yes. Parents Weekend meant that, unless he wanted to make people run halfway across town just to see what his students had been up to, he was going to be holding his Boards office hours here, while trying to finish everything up early, as he had company of his own to get back to ( Read more... )

"Hello?" Hank knocked on the door just to make sure his presence was known.

Of course Jono was going to smile up at whoever was in the doorway, and keep an absolutely cool head. After all, that's what he did with every other imposing figure that had come into his office today. And this one wasn't even all that imposing, by comparison.

The face in the doorway still gave Jono a moment's pause, and his polite smile faltered for a moment.

"Dr. Pym."

Somewhere in the back of Jono's head, there was that mantra of 'please don't recognize me as a member of the anti-Initiative New Warriors, Dr. Pym. I have a secret identity but how many blue-faced anti-registration activists are out there giving Stark a headache?' His face, on the other hand, had mostly just settled into a slightly stunned expression. This could be any Pym, from anywhere in the multiverse. Breathing probably wouldn't hurt, right then.

"Can I help you with anything today, Doctor?"

Surprisingly not too many! But, you know, there was that.

Well, there was someone who recognized him right off the bat. He smiled vaguely, attempting to place Starsmore beyond 'One of the X-Men?'

"Victor Mancha is in your class, I believe?"

OhThankGod. Jono exhaled a little, and then gave a little nod of his head.

"One of the students who participates the most, I'd say," he confirmed, trying not to look too relieved that this wasn't some sort of raid on his office while there were three members of the New Warriors here on the office.

... Though, in retrospect, Jono didn't suppose Dr. Pym would be raiding anything out of costume.

"You're... er... related?"

He knew that Victor was a cyborg, if only from a conversation on the beach in a reality that didn't exist any longer. He was trying not to think to hard on how family relations worked, with cyborgs.

Don't give him any ideas, Jono. Wait... no. Wrong Hank Pym. YOU'RE SAFE. FOR NOW.

"It's... complicated."

"When is it not?" Jono even actually managed a wry smile when he said that. Oh, Hank. Did you know how complicated things were?

... Jono wanted to think he did, and even he didn't.

"You're here to check up on him, then, are you?"

Hank smiled and nodded at that. Because he was being that grandpa who was going to put the grades up at work. Possibly while drinking out of a mug that proclaimed him the second best grandpa.

"He's doing well?"

"He's making friends, participating in class discussions... for a student in a course about how to cope with existing on the outskirts, he really doesn't seem all that far removed from people in general. Would it be terribly off for me to wager that the 'outskirts' that he relates himself to are a matter of circumstance, more than choice?"

He was going to try to sound all intelligent, because he was talking to Hank Bloody Pym about a class that he taught that was... not exactly steeped in academia.

"Is it usually by choice?"

"Deal with many angry teenagers whose rage at the world mostly stems from the fact that they are teenagers?"

Jono had been one of those, even before he'd manifested his powers! Though, in fairness, Jono's life had still been pretty screwed up, being the great-grandson of the last surviving member of Clan Akkaba. Or so he'd thought, at the time.

"Still, you make a fair enough point."

Ultron, Jono. That is all.

"But that's good. Good that he's adjusting like a normal teenager." Despite only being 4. "Very good."

He was an awesome grandpa.

"Normal around here doesn't really amount to much, Dr. Pym," Jono noted, biting his cheek for a moment to keep from saying 'good' a few times, himself. "I think if I ever had a mind to do so, I could probably count the 'normal' people on the fingers of one hand. And even then, probably only after some sort of horrific lawnmower accident. Still... he seems to know who it is he wants to be, and where he wants to belong, and that's more than I can say for most of my students."

"...I fight crime by shrinking and growing based on particles I invented," Hank replied. "Normal is a relative term here."

"I'm blue," Jonothon noted. "Trust me, I've noticed."

Really. Really, Hank.

"I just care that he's making friends and..." You know, not evil.

"He is," Jonothon confirmed, trying for the life of him to sound reassuring. "He gets along well with the other students in my class, and I know I've seen him socialising with others his age at picnics and the like. I can't speak to how he is outside of school hours, but..."

He tilted his head, considering who he was speaking to. And then he decided, to hell with it. Full disclosure.

"He came to me the other week, asking my opinion on one of the other teachers. I don't think he has much to be worried about, but his number one concern was that if he were to give the man a demonstration of his powers as was requested, he might be playing into something... perhaps bigger than he was prepared to handle. He strikes me as a very responsible lad, Dr. Pym. One who doesn't want to take unnecessary risks regarding not only who, but what he is."
