Aaron had never understood the concept of a comforting touch that wasn't sexual. And as far as sexual comfort went, it was more about the sex than the comfort for him. He didn't think anyone could offer him comfort. Especially without having breasts and somewhere to stick his dick.
Touch was only associated with sex. He didn't like people touching him otherwise. He didn't like hugs or kisses on the cheek. He really didn't like cuddling. Not because he was a cold-hearted bastard, but because he didn't understand it. In the same way that he didn't understand trust, or unconditional love. These things that he was never offered as a child just plain didn't make sense to him. And in the beginning it was because it wasn't given to him, but as he got older he just refused it.
Not that it was offered very often, but when it was - he recoiled. Until he figured out sex. Then - that was the only touch he cared about.
He didn't understand how holding someone close could take away anything that hurt, or make anything in his life different. He didn't understand how someone could possibly sleep with a chick curled up in his personal space.
These things just baffled him.
And yet he was the one looked at like a freak. Granted he didn't care what people thought of him, but it was just one more thing that he didn't understand. He really didn't care to try to understand.
People in his life were used to it. Those that stuck around. Jake and his family, while touchy-feely with each other, left Aaron alone. Mr. O'Dell didn't pat Aaron on the back in congratulations or in any other prideful way. Grandma O'Dell didn't kiss his cheek. The only time Jake ever hugged Aaron was in game winning celebrations. Jake's sister never ruffled Aaron's hair the way she might do to Jake.
The only person in the family that wasn't shunned was Mrs. O'Dell. On the rare occasion she was known for getting her arms around Aaron, and him staying there, letting himself lean into her.
He pushed girls away that insisted on cuddling after sex, turned his back on them, or left.
He didn't understand it, and therefore it did nothing but make him feel awkward and weird. Maybe a part of him did resent it. The fact that such an act was supposed to make a person feel better. If Aaron needed to feel better, he got laid. That was all that he needed.
Despite it all, there was something different with Felicity.
He had noticed early on that she liked the comforting touches, the cuddling. The more he screwed around with her, he slowly gave in bit by bit. He could admit he thought of her as a friend, and if putting an arm around her would get her to go to sleep without taking off - then he'd do it. It wasn't like he could go out and get sex that amazing just anywhere.
And as more time went by, he started to notice the small looks that crossed her features which she tried to hide. When she was upset, forcing away a frown, or when she couldn't force it away. He didn't know why, but he didn't like when she had that look on her face. For one, it tended to make her more distant with him and therefore the sex wasn't quite the same. More so...he just didn't like it. He thought she was a cool and fun girl, and he just preferred it if she was in a good mood.
So when it came to her wanting physical comfort, just touch, he would eventually give in. He'd put up a fight and try to get his kind of touch out of it, but he'd give in in the end. It didn't make him understand it any more than he did, but he saw that it did something for her. That for some reason when she curled up against him, her head under his chin and his arm around her, she was comforted. Why him, he didn't know. Maybe she just needed that from anyone. While it worried him, and he made sure to remind himself that it could be a sign for things going very very bad for him, he just accepted it.
It made her feel better. And if she was feeling better, she would stick around. If she stuck around, he would get laid, maybe have some good laughs. Having her around was something he was finding he liked, because it was fun and easy, and he truly thought she was a cool person.
It didn't change the facts though. He only hoped she would understand that it wasn't going to be a normal thing, because he was pretty sure the more she was that close the more he would need his space.
