I FINALLY have some time to sit down and write about my awesome Tuesday night!
"We R Who We R" had glow in the dark outfits!
I saw Ke$ha perform in Dayton on Tuesday, which was overall pretty good. I was not expecting such a young demographic to be at the concert. It was a mix of college students (it was being hosted by Wright State University's Activity Board) and high school students, with a few younger kids thrown in and plenty of parents. I watched two dads who were sitting next to each other compare and discuss Blackberries. It made me laugh. The crowd was also dressed interestingly...it was like a mix of a high school pep rally for Ke$ha and a frat party. We actually got amazing seats, and were much closer to the stage than I originally expected.
The opener was Beardo...and I could have done without him. His first two songs were about snorting cocaine, something I'm pretty sure at least 60% of the people there have not done. He was also rocking tight white jeans, New Balances, and this outrageous mullet that was apparently braided on the sides. I didn't think he was particularly good, and his set was only 20 minutes long, thank goodness. The girl who parked next to me told us after the concert about how he was being really creepy and hitting on her in the time between his set and Ke$ha's. Creeper. And he looks like he's 40.
Then Ke$ha came on! Her set was relatively short too--hour an half tops, so we were out of the arena by 9:30 pm. Despite it being short, it was pretty good! One of her stage managers/roadies was dressed up as Santa Claus, and she had a couple costume changes, and these hilarious dancers. She covered all her hits, and threw in a few fun songs like "Dinosaur" and "Party at a Rich Kids House." She also performed "Grow a Pear" where she plastic wrapped two guys to a chair, and had a person dressed as a pear and another dressed as a giant penis dance around them. It was pretty amusing, and I thought it was hilarious. "The Harold Song" was her only true ballad, but it was pretty good. The energy of the performance was amazing, and I really want to party with Ke$ha. She managed to get through everything pretty well, and like I said before, we were out by 9:30. This gave us time to have a dance party in the parking lot while we were waiting in the really long line to leave.
"Grow a Pear" That's supposed to be a pear dancing around two guys on chairs.
I was really surprised by the vocal quality--granted, she had backup singers, but Ke$ha wasn't that bad. I thought it would be like her SNL performance, which wasn't really that spectacular. But it wasn't too bad. She did her own autotuning because she had a DJ booth she worked out of for some of her songs, which really, in my opinion, reinforced that she knows what she's doing. There was, of course, lots of glitter, and confetti. It was amazing. There was also a piñata she and her dancers and singers destroyed while Santa Clause covered "(You Gotta) Fight For Your Right (To Party)" by the Beastie Boys, and you could definitely tell who knew the song and who didn't.
Overall, it was a pretty good concert. Definitely worth the ticket price, and I would see her again (I might take my little sister to see her in Indy). I had a ton of fun, and I thought she kind of got back to basics--her set wasn't that elaborate, but it got the job down, and it was more about having a ton of fun and not caring. Essentially, it was what's Ke$ha is about, not trying to be any fancy, but just getting drunk and having a good time.
