Yesterday we were in Pret around closing time and the manager came round and gave us two tubs of fruit salad each because "we'll have to throw it away otherwise"; a little later we got into a discussion with her about what they do with the non-fruit food waste and she said they give it to a food charity, which I was really pleased by. This would be unremarkable, except as we've discovered recently, Starbucks do not give their food to a food charity, or to their customers, or even to staff members at the end of a working day; they also, according to this woman, throw bleach on their waste bins to make sure no one can dumpster-dive free food, which sounds to me like putting EFFORT into being wasteful.
Anyway, Jess says that while Nero and Costa do variably better coffee than Pret, Pret still does better (and cheaper) espressos than Starbucks, and they're clearly less wretched about wasting food, so I don't think we're bothering with SB any more.
Robin Ince's Dirty Dirty Book Club was sadly lacking in as much Ince as I'd have liked but made up for it by introducing me to a couple of unheard-of comedians and also some Nick Doody. Now Jess is at work, Lindsay is asleep & will be skating later, and I am ... trying to avoid the timeline again, probably. Whoops.
