rufflebutts: it makes me really mad when people talk about desire and their “preferences” as a way to excuse themselves for not desiring fat people or brown people or trans people or disabled people or whatever without mentioning the politics of desire and the social constructs that form preferences. no. that’s not an acceptable excuse. i want you to challenge yourself. people are not brussels sprouts and there are SO MANY reasons we consider some people beautiful and overlook others and “it’s just my preference” is an absurd way to frame that.
why are people so intent on make believing that they are islands and everything about them was formed in some weird vacuum?
jess: not everyone understands “the politics of desire” or “the social constructs that form preferences”. how is that not an acceptable excuse? not everyone went to college or university and studied this bullshit, tumblr. not everyone understands the bullshit terms you use. not everyone dedicates their entire internet life to getting it right, either, or has time to spend doing that.
and by this logic, gay people best start examining just why they prefer one gender over the other! and try real hard to love dicks, guys! or vaginas! because if you don’t, you’re like, not challenging yourself. and the most important thing about your sexuality is that you’re CHALLENGING yourself, right? not that you’re having a relationship you want with someone you’re actually sexually attracted to.
I agree we should be accepting of everyone. I don’t agree we should want to fuck everyone, because on a fundamental level: I fucking don’t want to fuck everyone. I have preferences about how people look and what genitalia they’ve got. I know. I’m a terrible, terrible person.
