While I'm on the subject, reviews or "this is a really good book" on

Goodreads are always appreciated. In this instance it's not attention-whoring (I can't see my Lulu reviews), it just makes people more likely to buy the books, and I do kind of need the money.
I have just finished reading Generation Kill via my new "don't stop reading just because you've reached a convenient place to stop, stop when you physically have to" method of book-reading, and I have many thoughts. I was originally not going to put them on LJ because some of them were windy and pretentious and to do with how humans interact and wandered into "I have autism" territory, which is full of "fuckwit commenter" landmines, so you can have what I said to Jess via email this afternoon:
My thoughts are mostly to do with what the Marines were unable to see about the behaviour of the people they were "liberating", and I have already had one discussion about trauma psychology and conditioning* with a drunk paratrooper and it didn't go well. I think what I like is what Walt was saying, that you can see these people who are so very different come to learn about each other. I feel like they see simultaneously more and less than other people about what's going on - more, and less, because they're viewing everything through marine propaganda and superstition, but more, because they're there, and they're not fucking stupid.
* I'm not sure these are the right terms, but what I meant is "they will do or say anything if it makes whoever is hitting them stop" and "long-term planning becomes impossible under demented regimes or constant bombardment".
