my law school attracts a lot of environmentalists and health nuts / vegetarians / vegans (sorry to clump them all in the same category - i understand there are distinctions but that is beside the point here). my point is it is a very liberal place. it is so liberal that there are unwritten rules of etiquette, if you will. what i mean is that there are lifestyle choices that will be frowned upon by almost everyone if one so chooses this dark path. For example, you will not be viewed upon favorably if you drink regular cola or drink your coffee out of a styrofoam cup. throwing away recyclables is also a huge no-no. personally, i even feel uncomfortable drinking bottled water since everyone knows it’s healthier for you and the environment to just drink tap water from a reusable water bottle.
so now on to my main point. the whole reason i painstakingly set up this whole frou frou law school world is to frame two of the biggest sins: 1) using the elevator to go up 2-3 floors when you’re not handicapped or elderly and 2) eating at mcdonald’s. so you can imagine my shock and amazement when these three (not small) girls jumped on the elevator today to go up ONE LEVEL while carrying their greasy mcdonald’s bags. i noticed the looks of disgust on some of the other elevator passengers’ faces. i was even more shocked to find that these girls aren’t law students but they were students from the neighboring pharmacy and nursing schools (i noticed the embroidery on their scrubs).
personally, i don’t enjoy imposing my views of the world onto others. i don’t care if you don’t drink diet coke or eat meat. i don’t even care if you use the elevators to go up only two floors. i have to admit i was a bit peeved by these girls’ blatant disregard of our social order though.
