because she said so

Because _breezybee passed the torch to me.

1. Total number of films I own on DVD/video: Over a hundred or so.

2. The last film I bought: Hotel Rwanda -because the best and most heartbreaking account of how awful other Africans are to Africans and countries are to Africa.

3. The last film I watched: Kingdom of Heaven - Orlando Bloom + Ridley Scott = Brilliant.

4. Five films that I watch a lot or that mean a lot to me:

This is going to be torture. How do I choose just five? That’s a horrible concept.

1. Gangs of New York
I think I might be one of the few women on the planet that does not get queasy at the thought of violence. When I first saw the preview for it in theaters years ago all I did was hit my mother over and over again with excitement. Leonardo DiCaprio just wills the screen to his liking. Daniel Day-Lewis is just extraordinary as the butcher and the dynamic between Amsterdam and the butcher continues to blow my mind.

It’s the first film I actually thought Cameron Diaz could act in. I love the storytelling of the film. The way the past is represented and how far Martin Scorsese would go in order to make everything look hauntingly real. I just admire the actors so much and obviously the director. Every time it’s on cable I stay up and watch it even though I have the dvd. That’s how I know it’s my all time favorite film. Why Leonardo wasn’t even nominated for his role as Amsterdam is beyond me.

2. The Last Samurai
This was one of those films I really didn’t want to see. The movie was coming out after the whole Tom/Nicole break up and as I’m a little obsessed with Kidman I was so devastated for her. I know that sounds kind of strange but it’s true. But Oprah did a whole thing on the movie and showed these compelling beautiful clips that I knew immediately I must see this film. I didn’t know much about the Samurai’s at that point but the way they were portrayed was so striking that I actually feel the film changed me - at least a little bit. Algren [Tom Cruise] is struggling so hard to find the man he’s supposed to be and by getting captured by the Samurai’s he becomes that man.

There are so many scenes where I can just pinpoint and say - “okay I’m going to cry now” but only because everything feels so incredibly real. There is a scene between the woman Taka who has taken him in where she puts her dead husbands clothes on him and I swear I have not seen to this day a more beautiful love scene. There was no taking clothes off, or deep punctured kisses just these two people pained by their past and hoping to get a grasp on their future - together.

3. The Lord of the Rings Trilogy
Now I thought about not including these because they are separate films but I figure I can cheat at least a little bit. I still have yet to read the books, which I know is terrible. I keep hoping someone will take pity on me and just buy me the books so that I don’t have to feel like a horrible fan. I knew from the moment I heard about “The Fellowship of the Ring” that I was in for a hell of a ride. Not only is the first film filled with magnificent characters and beautiful actors but an incredible storyline to work with.

The scenery is to die for. I immediately fell in love with Legolas and then in turn became obsessed with Orlando Bloom. I don’t know - there’s something about all the films that always grabs my attention and pulls me in for a long period of time. I go through certain phases where I must watch the films every week or I will lose my mind. Whenever I’ve hit a rough patch I can always count on the films unique style to cheer me up and take my mind off whatever is going on. I actually own all extended editions - which only means I’m a geek.

4. Dogville
This is one of those films that did not get a lot of heat when it was out in theaters, mostly because it was such an independent film. It’s done on a screen stage without very many props and no scenery so you must use your imagination, by the second act you completely forget that it’s done all on a stage. I really believe it is Nicole Kidman’s best performance and that it’s a shame the movie wasn’t recognized more thoroughly for it’s screaming portrayal of the way humanity works. It’s chalked filled with talented actors, Lauren Bacall, Paul Bettany amongst many others. The film leaves you stunned and horribly sick - but only because it catches human minds so perfectly you can’t help but wonder about your own self doubt. Lars Van Trier is an incredible, thoughtful director.

5. Notting Hill
There always has to be one movie in a group of films filled with intensity that makes you laugh and smile. For me that’s this film. It’s been one of my favorite films for some time. It could just be because I thought my name was used perfectly and pronounced most times correctly. Hugh Grant’s character Will always grabs my heart. He’s afraid of love. It’s so obvious but he loves Anna, which follows him around for quite a long time till he finally gives up. Julia Roberts’s portrayal of the movie star Anna who is damaged by the life she has been given is in some ways heartbreaking. She wants to love Will and be with him but she’s not trustful at all. I don’t know how to explain my love for the film. I think it’s the film that made me want to move to England. Also I’m a sucker for romantic comedies.

That was hard.
