(Copypasted from my devART journal.)
The topic of tonight's sermon, because I kinda sorta like to chronicle my adventures in Internetdramaland:
Please learn to differentiate facts from things that have not even been remotely hinted at, as well as learn to not tell people how they were trying to get across their own comments. And maybe try not to be contentious for the sake of being contentious, and not overreact when someone points something out to you.
No names mentioned because... yeah. Names don't need to be dragged in unless by some odd chance the person involved actually sees this journal and decides to drag them in herself. *shrug*
Now, let's begin with a bit of backstory.
I was directed by a friend on AIM to a macro deviation that was overall suggesting Yubel was a product of incest. Half-seriously, it would seem, as they made it a large point to tell me "I was just kidding" the whole conversation I had with her, while at the same time stating what they presumed to be facts in the deviation summary, which included that she thought Yubel was fused with her father, the king, and that's what made her a hermaphrodite. We both snickered for a while (in the bad way) before I decided, what the hell, I'll make a comment just to clarify things. No harm intended.
It went something like this, definitely not verbatim:
"Out of curiosity, where in the world did you hear that Yubel was fused with her father? The king isn't actually her father in the first place, really; he's Juudai's father in that life. The series wasn't really specific on details, so where'd you draw those conclusions from?"
And it really was out of sheer curiosity. Admittedly, I probably should've worded it a little less bluntly, but I didn't think of it at the time, and even now, after the fact, I don't think it was really that harsh at all.
...I get an extremely pissy response to it. The artist seemed to have interpreted my comment as a personal attack or something, I really have no idea. I don't remember the comment, but it put a lot of words in my mouth (implied I didn't feel she was allowed to have a sense of humor and that I thought she was a "BS spewing hick", in those exact words), told me that Yubel could not possibly have become a hermaphrodite by "magic", and tried to tell me something I basically interpreted as "well, it was my friend's interpretation and I've never actually seen the show, but you're wrong anyway".
Um, what?
I reply back, reiterating that the series was in no way specific about anything, but it definitely didn't even imply that the king was in any way involved in the transformation aside from perhaps setting it up, and even that's dictated by logic alone, based on the conversation they have. And yes, Yubel kind of did become a hermaphrodite by magic, because it was a magic-using procedure. Because this is a shounen anime, not intended to be particularly realistic (as any GX lover should know, to be honest). I also said something about covering her ass, as she added a rather bitter-sounding edit to her deviation warning people not to "spit their opinions" at her or something. Don't remember exactly, too lazy to go back and copy-paste.
Anyway, the last response I get before she hides the comment string entirely?
"I'll be simple. That arc was confusing, messed up, and all in general, anything can happen. It was one small joke, then you had to toss in, "Where in the WORLD did you hear THAT?" likes it's common knowledge and every general idiot in the world should know it. So yes, you were snappy. I didn't say you were wrong, but honestly, just shoving it in my face like that doesn't make you look like you're here to tell facts.
M'kay, was a joke. M'kay, I got some facts wrong. M'kay, enough with the 'every tiny detail is common knowledge' thing.
And it's worthless telling me all those things because I didn't see it to begin with, so I don't really CARE. I'm just interpreting something the way another person did. Yes, I did some useless arguing on facts there. Awesome. Whatever? I was wrong there, but can you stop acting like ONE little detail makes me the only one to think it?
Really, fanboy/fangirl over details in another area.
Oh dear, I think you're being a ass at that comment, little miss pwecious. Seriously. You play nice, I play nice. You sorta suck at playing nice."
Overreacting much?
It was very confusing, I'll agree there. But... to be honest, it kind of is common knowledge. Most people draw as many conclusions from what very little we were offered during the past life flashback as they can, but I haven't heard a single thing about Yubel being fused with the king, who isn't her father in the first place. Am I the only one who thinks she sounds more than a bit bitter about being wrong in that reply, by the way she phrases things and flings random, condescending insults at me?
Who is she to tell me how I was attempting to phrase something? Unless she lives inside my head, she can't actually say that for certain.
Maybe I am ruining her fun by presenting the truth to her... but if that's so, then maybe she needs to learn to handle being corrected just a little bit better? She makes it sound like I was attempting to shove it in her face, which I genuinely wasn't. I tried to write things out rationally, and I get my throat jumped down.
Moral: if you try to argue something that you don't know anything about anyway, that prooooobably makes you wrong. And even if you THINK the person who was pointing out facts to you is being a total bitch, being a total bitch right back isn't necessarily the best course of action.
