so some very politically powerful professors decided to push to get my program to buy a mutual fund database (CRSP for those into finance). after a lot of fighting, my boss agrees to let the student computing fund (my budget) pay for it. i fight this because its 5 thousand bucks and thats a lot of money for a tightly woven 100 thousand dollar computing budget (didnt have time to pad my budget a lot this year). also it wasnt for students. it was for some research some professors were doing. fuck that shite.
to make a long story short, i loose (well gave up cause my boss said i would never win). she was right too. my closest and strongest political ally agrees.

submit my paperwork and order the database only to appease everyone and make it look like the order was for students. more political bullshite. fine, whatever!

realize the database is not here yet. look into the problem. discover that central uc berkeley campus really fucked up and sent the check to the wrong address (central university of chicago campus). CRSP is part of uchicago.
request that the original check by canceled and a new one sent to the correct address.
(march 2003)
come to realize that my request to cancel the check in january had never been completed.
central university of chicago ends up cashing the original check and not telling anyone.
meanwhile the professors who originally pushed for the data start to get pissed off cause they need the data. they decide to raise a stink. they first come to me and i explain the situation. they get really pissed off and yell at me even though none of this is my fault.
well then today i find out they are having a meeting with my boss and the deans to explain how incompetent i am and to try to get me fired for incompetence.
i will have a job in the end but that is fucked up political bullshite. i have so much email and paperwork to back up my case that it is not even funny.
if everything had been done that i requested and as i submitted there would not be a problem. not only that, i shouldnt have been involved in the first place.
god, i hate mondays.
