I've got to admit it's getting better~... oh wait, no, it isn't

Today the energy-saving curfew kicks in even earlier than before, at 18:00. Within the next several minutes power is cut from the recreational computer, the radio tower, and the EMF generator. Lights go out early in the ag levels as well, as photoperiods in different sections of the greenhouse are decreased from default settings by four hours, ( Read more... )

Well, fuck. The lights were out earlier again. The clock on Church's HUD read 1800, a full two hours before they'd been cutting out in the past couple days. The intercoms still didn't work. He hadn't tried anything else yet, but he had his portable, low on battery as he hadn't tried to recharge it since the power cuts had begun. A quick attempt to post a question to the computer network failed as well, so great, the Rec computer network was down. Fuck, fuck, fuck. Not like he was in any danger - the one benefit of already being dead. But they were running out of time, and if everyone else died, his chances of getting off this stupid bullshit chunk of ice would be pretty goddamn slim.

Lacking any ability to contact anyone, Church headed to the dining room, grabbing one of the hand-powered flashlights along the way. Maybe some of the others would be there eating dinner. It seemed a good enough place to meet up, in any case, and talk. Maybe they could figure something out.

Delirium wandered into the dining room from the other side, her path lit by a small, glowing jellyfish that floated in front of her near her feet. This place was... small. The halls didn't start or end anywhere, but you could walk around in them forever and always pass the same things over and over again. It took her a few moments to notice Church at the other end of the room, but when she did she waved both arms at him.

"Hello!" she called.

"Huh?" He turned at the unfamiliar voice, and stared momentarily at her, then at the glowing jellyfish. That wasn't normal. But she didn't seem harmful. "Uh, hi. You must be new. Name's Church," he said, walking toward her with a hand extended in greeting. "How long've you been here?"

"I'm not new, " she replied. "I've been me for a long time. But I haven't been me here for very long." She looked down at his hand, then took it enthusiastically. "I'm Delirium, pleased to meet you, Church!"

"...Yeah, great. Okay." He looked back down at the jellyfish, then withdrew his hand as apparently she didn't know how to shake properly. "You wanna tell me what that thing is? I thought those needed water to live in."

"My jellyfish?" she asked, peering up into his visor, her head canted slightly to the side in a questioning look. "It doesn't need water because it's not supposed to. I don't need it to be in water." This seemed like a perfectly normal thing to understand.

"What, so you're, like, magical or something?" Not that that made any sense, but he honestly couldn't think of any other explanation. "Can you make other stuff?"

"Something. You ask a lot of questions." She rocked up onto the toes of her feet to knock on his visor, then took a step to the side, trying to look at the back of his armor.

"Hey, what the-" Annoyed, he turned to keep his eyes on her. "Yeah, well you're not exactly normal, are you. I mean, with the floating jellyfish and all. Seems like a valid thing to ask questions about."

"I'm not supposed to be normal." She tried to turn with him, but quickly gave up and settled for a perch on one of the dining hall tables, dangling her feet over the side. The jellyfish darted up briefly to eye level, then disappeared into the folds of her loose shirt. "I've met a lot of people who were normal but then they weren't," she continued more seriously. "If I answer all your questions and you understand that might happen to you, too."

"...Right, okay. So, do you know where anyone else is right now? It'd be really cool to talk to someone... else."

Delirium frowned, though it didn't seem to be directed entirely at Church. "I think they... they would have to be inside, because they're not meant to be outside, and even if they are outside they can't stay for very long so you could just wait." She stood up on the table and gave him a little bow. "I'm sure if you look you'll find them!" she said encouragingly before turning to walk down the edge of the table, her arms out like she was walking a balance beam.

"Yeah, okay, thanks for stating the obvious." He sighed and looked around the room, surprised nobody else was turning up. Maybe he should look elsewhere. Maybe they all normally ate later, and right now were all too busy freaking out at the computer. Maybe he'd find someone on the way there, at least. "Okay, well, time to look, just like you said. You, uh... you have fun doing... that."
