[MOD POST] The game (you just lost--)

Oct 22, 2008 13:11

PLEASE COMMENT TO THIS POST--unserious subject line aside, it's been brought to my attention that some people are unhappy with the sudden acceptance of duplicate/multiple characters, especially duplicates that have currently active players ( Read more... )

I'll state my opinion again.

The duplicates make me feel uneasy and now I feel like my feet are being stepped on. After the majority of the RP turned into using personal journals, I felt like it was more like a traditional RP rather than a DR.

I'm okay with the children characters because they are clearly different from their modern counterparts but when there are two near modern characters together, I'm unsure what to do. I'm trying to remain IC and stay true to the comic and the nation's own history but what do I do when there's another one of me? It's difficult to do any interaction without staring confused and what about my own character's history with the other players? The memory isn't shared and could cause confusion.

These duplicates make me worry about the conflicts that could arise such as time periods or alternate universe characters.

Sorry if I sounded like an ass. It's just how I feel.

This is a DR. :V mynameiscanada October 22 2008, 17:53:44 UTC
I actually encourage open membership. There are only so many characters too, so okaying duplicates should go without saying.

If people want to make it privatized, they can either join an actual private RP, or make one/move/whatever. I don't think it's good form to change the community based on the sentiment that "it's not a DR anymore." Of course it's still a DR. Just because the user perception of it changes doesn't automatically change its core. (And this DR just doesn't happen to be full of crack and shit like more popular ones.)

OR (because other DRs function in this way), you could just say that anything posted in personal journals is NOT DR canon. People are supposed to be putting threads in the community journal anyway, if it's supposed to be DR-related. :V If people wanna party in their own journal, that is sure fine. They can make up their own rules there, rather than attempting to apply them to the community as a whole.

addendum; by 'personal journals =/= dr canon', I meant henceforth, and for people to kindly refrain from bringing up future personal journals threads in the actual dr community. Not for everything to be disregarded, including past posts. :T THIS IS JUST A SUGGESTION

If you want something to be canon but closed posting (eg, a date or something), just put it in the comm and tag it with "closed/locked to xxx" (someone else mentioned this, too)? The only fundamental difference is that the post will be in a comm journal rather than your own, and that's trivial when you can manipulate tags to find posts easily.

Shoot, I lost the game! dread_pirate_uk October 22 2008, 18:09:29 UTC
I probably shouldn't talk, since I just got here haven't even introduced myself yet and oh gosh, I guess I'm sort of a multiple... but to my credit I have been watching this place for... forever.

I agree with America to a point though, too many of the modern characters could get far too confusing too fast, but I think different periods of time should be okay...

All right, I'll go shut up and retreat to my corner until I get an intro post up.

On another topic, oh thank god I made it just in time! *weeps manly tears in relief and celebrates with alcohol and cabinboys wenches*

You know I'm all for turning this into a legitimate DressingRoom; I'll try to enumerate why, though I honestly have to wonder if listening to conflicting opinions is going to help at this stage, because we're all coming from different places on this issue and there seems to be little room for compromise.

For me (this is the most personal aspect of it), I see this game as potentially really awesome characterization practice; try different characters in a stress-free setting. Keep some, lose some. Bring some back. No worries about continuity, nor about doubles because it happens. That would be intensely cool. That's why I joined, and why I'll definitely drop Turkiye and Sweden if the game closes; I wouldn't want a potentially better, more enthusiastic player to be left out in the cold just because I took up unspoken dibs on them first. A protraction of this sentiment reaches other characters, too, those whom I don't see as often as I would like. You end up pining for them, and how. There's only one of them, and so you wait ( ... )

I feel terrible for adding a post that doesn't directly contribute to the discussion at hand, but I agree with you wholeheartedly and upon reflection, I probably shouldn't have been so succinct with my post. (But that's okay, since you've summed up how I feel about the situation rather well.)

I'd also just like to add to the duplicate characters bit, especially since you brought up the whole lack of an application process. While potentially confusing for the characters, I think that working with duplicate characters is wholly a good thing for muns. It allows people to closely interact with someone else with the same character, and get a first-hand view of another characterization. For someone like me, who has very little confidence in their own character voice, I feel that such interaction provides an ample learning experience to build on your own character ( ... )

DR or whatever, I got confused anyway. thesex_machine October 22 2008, 18:55:01 UTC
I don't mind have duplicates of myself characters, because, as said up there, this is a Dressing Room.
But I just get confused everytime there is a double one, I don't know how I should interact with them. I mean for example I can't have the same relation with each ArthurS that are growing up exponentially in a couple of days in the same way.

But ultimately, I this game and I hope this won't fall in a winy drama.

Forgive me for any mistakes, duh.
