Things are... things are better. He's not trying to control her. He's not trying to tell her she can't do this. He believes she can, and he has faith ( Read more... )

Iroh was outside, walking around the perimeter of the apartments, just...looking, thinking, arms together in front of him and hidden in the sleeves of his robes.

He was humming to himself, as he was wont to do.

At the war meeting, he had not had much to say, but then that was because he had always been wise enough to listen to those that had better ideas than he did.

Where he was best was at the execution.

"I suppose you are looking for training," he said, without looking up. He was still looking at the wall as one might look at the moon and stars--there were no moon and stars to look at here.

"Yeah," she admits, pausing slightly and tugging at the braid that hangs down at her neck.

"I should've come to you earlier."

"You were unconscious earlier," Iroh aptly pointed out.

"There is that," she admits, with a smirk. "But I'm up now."

She still tires quicker than she should, but she's determined not to let that stop her.

Iroh turned to look at her now. "I train soldiers," he said to her. "Soldiers fight side-by-side with their countrymen. They follow orders--or at the very least, plans of attack. Soldiers work together. Before I decide to teach you, I must know: are you looking to become a lone warrior, or are you willing to protect those at your side--and to allow them to protect you?

She hesitates, but doesn't look away or flinch from his gaze. She's going to be honest about this.

"I'm not a warrior," she says. He thinks she is, but she isn't. "Don't think I'd be a good soldier. But I want to help. I want to fight with people. I want to be a part of this.

"But I also want to be the one who kills my brother."

and she can't do that unless she gets a helluva lot better.

Iroh looked at her with that penetrating gaze for a moment longer, breathed in through his nose, and...

Clapped his hands together and smiled. "Well, that's settled then, niece. When are we getting started? Right now would be good; the sun's almost up."

"Now's as good a time as any," she says, smirking back. And no, she's not going to rise to the 'niece'. Wait 'til she starts calling him Uncle Iroh.

She spins the stake in her hand and tucks it into ther belt. "Where do we start?"

"Now...we wait for the others to arrive," Iroh said genially, taking out a packet that had been tucked inside his robes. "Salted sunflower seeds?"

He held the packet out towards her.

"Thanks, Uncle Iroh." she smirks and holds out a hand, palm up. "I'm starved."

He gave her a thorough helping and practically beamed since she called him "Uncle."

"So..." he started conversationally. "When should I start preparing for my grandchildren?"

Luckily she's been prepared for this by Zuko. Otherwise she'll have things to say about people accusing her of being pregnant all of a sudden.

"When we've been rutting for more than a few weeks," she says firmly.

So it's more like two months. She was unconscious for a fortnight of that.

He considered this and then nodded.

"Fair enough. At least you've loosened him up a bit. I always did think it would take the love of a good woman to do that for him."

"You're implying I'm a good woman?"

She sounds almost insulted, through the mouthfuls of sunflower seeds.

"Yes," Iroh said simply.

Mel shakes her head, despairingly. "Wait 'til you get to know me."
