Jim missed training. One could argue the fact that, since he's never gone to training, he's not missing it so much as not participating at all.
Instead, he's in the common room, with the Book of Dangers and his notebook, transferring information from one to the other. He'd wanted to be sure he got everything he knew about the Infected. It's not much.
Virus of unknown origin:
Blood-borne virus. Gestation to full-blown infection takes about 10 seconds.
If someone becomes infected, they may start convulsing and acting erratically, before the full-infection sets in. Effects of the infections include: profuse vomiting of blood (making it easy for people around them to be infected as well), loss of any sort of brain function other than the need to attack uninfected people.
The only outward signs are red eyes, and possibly blood around the mouth. The Infected are killed in the same manner as a human, and are no stronger or faster. They do not seem to care about pain, and have been witnessed to keep going while lit on fire.
There is no known cure.
When finished, he sets the Book down and picks up his glass of water, sipping it thoughtfully.
