The Common room was primed and ready. Makeshift lanterns were lit in the corners, and electric lights were set up. Room had been made for dancing and there were cushions all over for city, and coffee tables arranged for meals and drinks and tea ( Read more... )

Padme doesn't recognize any of the instruments and she does not know many stories.

Therefore, she sits with her hands folded in her lap, listening.

There's a British guy hiding among some cushions on the floor nearby. Or maybe he sat down on them and some fell on him. Regardless, he waves at Padme. He's trying to mingle. Cause there's people here, dammit!

Padme smiles. "Hello. I do not think we've met yet. My name is Padme."

"Definately not. I would have remembered that."

He smiles. "'m Jim."

Charming, without being lecherous.

"Jim. How long have you been here? Are you going to sing or anything?"

"Couple days. And not unless I find a bunch of guys who sing as off-key as I do. If that happens, I'll warn you so you can get to safety."

Padme laughs. "I do not know many songs, unfortunately. Music was never my strong point."

Politics and music did not go very well together.

He grins.

"Mine either. Not that I ever really tried."

"Well, they gave us all sorts of lessons when I was small, to see where my abilities lay. I always came out higher in politics than artistic endeavors."

"Politics is useful... It's considered much more useful, where I'm from, than music. But I think music is important too."

Where I'm from. Now he's talking like he believes all the 'other worlds' BS. Which he doesn't. Just trying to fit in.

"It's all important," Padme says. "Without art and music, we couldn't dream so well, I do not think."

The smile lessens to something small and nostalgic. Padme's talk of dreaming makes him think of Serena. Not that the two women were anything alike, but precisely because they're not. It was him that was more like Padme.

"Yeah... Dreams are good."

"They give us hope for the future...and that is desperately needed here."

He almost feels like a therapist of some sort. He's already said it at least twice today, and written once on the map by Britain, instead of putting a dot where he's from. It's become his catchphrase. But Selena finally believed it. Maybe the people here can too. Maybe Selena will come here and they can be together.

Maybe if the people here believe his words, there won't be another situation like those soldiers. Because you need to hope for more than survival or a 'future'. The soldiers hoped for a future, and that made them use women like cattle.

"It does get better than just survival..."

He chuckles.

"Should our motto. Make a big sign, and tack it up over the door, so I don't have to keep saying it... But people need to know."

Padme smiles back. "It's something we all need to be reminded of. This night...it's a good start."
