There was a Watcher stopping out for a walk. Not going far, just around the courtyard.

He nodded a greeting to a man smoking nearby.

"Good evening."

"Evening," Nick says, and casts a sideways glance at the source of the voice.

It's someone he hasn't met, but someone he's seen.

"Hope you don't mind the smell of smoke," he mutters.

He just waved a hand, "I'll manage. Find myself half-tempted to take it up again at times. But considering the limited supplies here, probably best not to bother."

"Yeah, I thought the same thing," he says, and smiles a little crookedly.

He offers his hand. "I'm Nick Carraway."

He shook his hand, "Rupert Giles, a pleasure."

Nick grins and the steadily burning cigarette travels to the corner of his lips.

He puffs.

"You're British?"

"English, yes," he remarked with a small smile.

"Ah. Never been across the Pond," Nick says, and plucks the cigarette from his mouth.

He stares at it.

"Knew an Oxford man, though."

"Oh? I went to Oxford actually. ...Some years ago now."

"You probably didn't know him," Nick smiles sadly, finally looking back up. "But then again, no one ever really knew him."

He's getting angsty, and he's quick to change topic.

"What'd you study?"

"Probably not," He nodded, "Especially if he wasn't there in the 1970s."

He added, "History, and ...are you all right?" His expression changed to concern.

"Try 1900s."

He shrugs and takes a few more puffs before flicking the butt into the air.

It lands on the ground not too far away, still burning.

"I'm alright," Nick says, stuffing his hands into his pockets. He smiles. "I'm getting in a little over my head, but isn't everyone?"

Cue surprised look from the Watcher.

"Oh, I see. This must be especially disconcerting for you then."

Nick shrugs.

"It could be worse."

Even in the midst of vampires, weird creatures, people who seem to be outright insane and just everything that Nick's surrounded by, it could be worse.

"My cousin could be here."

And she would, undoubtedly, make things much worse.

"Rather glad someone I know isn't here either. It's never gone well when he surfaced." Giles remarked. And he hasn't even mentioned that all that weird stuff? He's an expert in it. And he trains girls who can kick most people's asses.

"With my luck," Nick says, sounding a little bitter, "She'll end up here eventually."

At which point Nick will flee.

"So, Giles, what's an Oxford man like yourself do?"
