Josh had been around. Really, he had. But there was a time and place for things, and some things he knew he couldn't interfere with. He lived, he meditated, he blessed rooms and water, he made wine, he meditated more. For some of the time, he'd been in a state of nirvana, which had greatly unnerved Biff, since he'd been an invisible disembodied ( Read more... )

Johnny's been trying to make a point to be out in the common room more often. Try to make some attempts at being social. Anyway, his room gets mighty boring after a while. Especially if he gets too focused on problems from his world. Like something like good vs. evil matters.

He glanced up and noticed the unfamiliar man in the room.

"You ever heard about the shelf life of those things?" He asked casually.

"175 years, if the cellophane holds up. Give or take," Josh said. Some things he did still remember. They were just never useful.

Ask him how many licks it takes to get to the center of a tootsie pop! Go on, ask him!

He looked up, with a bright grin. "Hi."

"Sounds about right," Johnny said. "I remember going over it to one of my classes."

If he was telepathic, not psychic, he might have. But as it was, he didn't think to ask.

Instead, he gave a nod of greeting, "Hey, I'm John."

"I'm Josh," Josh said. "Short for Joshua. Anglicized from Yeshua. Bar-Yosef. You can just call me Josh."

Might as well get it all out in the open.

Oh, Johnny knew enough of the names. His mother was a devout Christian, even though he was never that religious. He was more concerned how the Rev. Purdy was hanging around his mom, and possibly trying to con her out of the Smith fortune. Anyway...

"Yeshua? As in Jesus? I know it's the Greek version. Parents named you after him, very religious, right?" He asked with clear skepticism apparent. Yes, he's a psychic, and yet a skeptic. Go fig.

"No, I'm the Son of God. You're...Johnny, right? My omnipotence is a bit off here," Josh said conversationally.

"You are? And yeah, some have called me that. What's next? Going to start talking about my friends and family too?" Oh, yeah big time skeptic here... >.>

Josh made a 'gulp!' expression. "Ooh, false idols. Not good. But I think it's okay if you're the false idol and you don't mean to be," Josh said. "And I really am the Son of God."

He broke a twinkie. There were now two whole twinkies in his hands.

Johnny stared back at him, slightly unnerved.

"I'm not a idol, or a prophet. I'm just me." Despite what Purdy claimed.

He admitted, "Good trick though."

"Except that it's not one."

Josh huffed out a sigh. How to convince him.

"You have a gift."

He reached out a hand.

"If you don't believe me, touch my hand, and see if that chanegs your mind.

...Although, a warning? It'll kind of be like you've got the stigmata for a second or two."

Johnny eyed him some at that. Granted he did admit at the meeting about his abilities.

He stared at that hand for a moment. Remembering one of his last conversations with Purdy before he came here.
"Destiny, Johnny. It is your destiny to help people. I truly believe that."

"I always thought destiny was a rosier word for fate."

"Call it whatever you want. Every event in your life has been
preparing you for this. Lessons. To make you ready."

Briefly he remembered. The blackened Washington Monument. Washington in flames. And he was in a world that he hoped that wouldn't be his world's fate as well.

And his mother's voice again, "Heed the still, small voice when
it comes...It came to Jeremiah and Daniel and Amos and Abraham. It will come to you. And when it does...do your duty.Briefly remembering his father, gazing with such pain and sadness ( ... )

Johnny finally let go, and almost fell to the floor. He leaned on his cane, panting some. His head hurt something fierce, and that wasn't all. Pain elsewhere too.

He collasped into a chair nearby, not speaking for a moment.

There wasn't any acknowledgement of belief, but he finally spoke in a hoarse voice, "I think your father's got a lot to answer for."

Well, granted he's still pretty bitter about how his life has ended up too.

"Then he shouldn't have need for people like me. And it didn't stop from what happened to this world." Johnny remarked, still bitter, and angry some.

"Of course he needs people like you. You're a good man, John Smith. Every world needs good men."

A pause. "This one isn't quite His. It's complicated.

More than that, there's more than just good in the universe, John. You know that.

There's a war, always a war, one being waged in every universe, on every planet.

In war, you can't win them all...even if you really want to."
