the ancient art of cake-making, (c) monk gyatso

Down at 202, there's a giant mess being made! Icing and batter and IT'S ALL AANG'S FAULT.

Yet, he looks so gosh-darned proud of himself. You're certainly welcome to come see why!

Meng's personal opinion would be that it looks like someone committed cake homicide in 202, with all the mess going on.

"Aang?" she asks once she catches sight of the Airbender. "What are you doing?"

Well, twelve-year-old boys do enjoy their messes! Aang turns around, tilting his head; Momo is on his shoulder, licking off cake batter from his paws and the little monk's face. Mmm!

"Hey, Meng! Come here, check it out! I'm making cake."

"Seriously? You know how?" Meng didn't realize cake-making was part of Airbender training at any of the Temples.

But then again, in an all-male environment someone would have to know how to cook, wouldn't they?

"What kind?"

"My master taught me, a long time ago." About, you know, hundred years or so!

Aang pulls the cake out of the oven, then fetches one of the messy bowls on the counter, waving Momo away who became too enamoured with the filling.

"You ever have a peach cake before?"

She shakes her head. "Nope, never." Meng peers at the cake curiously; it looks edible. "Is it good?"

"Well, whenever Master Gyatso made it, it was! But we'll find out after we taste it, I guess!"

Carefully, with airbending, Aang guided the fruit filling into the cake, 'fluffing' it up and twisting it before lifting up the plate. "You wanna try it with me?"

Meng tries not to blush (but she so totally is). "Sure," she agrees.

"What do I do?"

Aww! She's adorable when she blushes. Unfortunately, Aang is so totally oblivious. Boys, even Avatar boys, can be kind of dumb!

"Well. First, we need to eat! So, just hold up this butter knife, up straight into the air. It'd be easier if we had someone else with us, but we can manage it."

Meng could run back next door and come back with her roommates, so they can help eat the peach cake. She could.

But she's not going to throw away alone-time with Aang (what are you, crazy?). So she doesn't.

"Okay." She takes the butter knive and does as Aang says.

"Okay. Hold real still, Meng!"

Lifting up the cake very carefully with airbending, Aang backs around to stand behind Meng.

Suddenly, he yanks the cake towards her, and very neatly, it's cut by the butter knife!

The two halves of the cake land two plates that Aang holds up; he offers her one, beaming. "That wasn't so bad! Here. It's okay if you can't finish it."

Meng does as she's told and holds as still as she can. When Aang yanks the cake towards her, she flinches and ducks her head a little.

"Wow!" Meng exclaims when she sees the aftermath. "That was cool!"

She smiles as she takes the plate from Aang; their fingers brush the tiniest bit, making the color rise in Meng's cheeks again. "Thanks," she says.

Attempting to be as discreet as possible (she doesn't want to hurt Aang's feelings), Meng looks her half of the cake over. Still looks edible. She cuts off a piece with the edge of her fork and sniffs it. Smells pretty good.

Now for the major test - tasting. Meng puts the bite of cake into her mouth, eyes shut.

"Hey!" she exclaims after a few seconds. "This is pretty good!"

"R-really...?!"

She wasn't yankin' his chain, now, was she? Aang was decent in making himself food, but making cake was still a new field to him.

But he looks very happy to hear this.

Meng would never yank Aang's chain, even if she doesn't know what that expression means.

"Yeah, really," she replies. "And I've never had a peach cake before. But I like it."

Aang is very pleased to hear this.

"Good! I'm glad. I don't think it's perfect." Canned peaches and all. "But I'm grateful you like it. Thanks, Meng!"
