River had been curled up on a couch-cushion in 202, taking a nap.

And then she'd been dreaming.

Now, River picks up her head and shrieks.

Simon always keeps half an ear out for River, when he's anywhere nearby. He was, this time, and he comes running.

"Meimei?"

"Simon --" Pointing shakily ahead at absolutely nothing, River jumps up and cautiously clings to him. "In their space. In their way. They're dying, they need help --"

He holds on to her, knowing what she needs is the stability.

"Who's dying, meimei?"

No dismissing anything she sees.

"People in the rocks," she whispers. "Protectors didn't help them. Can't breathe in rocks forever."

He glances at the door, more automatically than out of actually expecting to see anything, because he knows he won't.

"Is that... the people who were here before?" he guesses.

River almost seems to be listening for a minute, as if gaining information from an invisible messenger or some nonexistent consult.

"Still here. Still in the rocks. Not much time -- I can't find them, Simon, I don't know how -- why do they tell me, I don't know where to look --"

"Ssh", he soothes her helplessly, "ssh, meimei. What are they telling you?"

"Things don't last," River says, in a voice less her own than a quote of some disembodied source. "Air. Food. Water. Life can't last down here."

"Don't know what they mean."

He hasn't forgotten what happened on Miranda, before they found the recording, and he fights back a shiver at her words.

"Is it... could it be... a memory? Of whatever happened here?"

"Maybe. Doesn't make sense -- couldn't be hearing it without a living speaker. Maybe ... it isn't for hearing?"

While she means it might be someone's dream, or inner monologue, the concept of speech not meant for her is alien to River these days, so she's not exactly clear.

"Maybe", he says with a worried frown. He knows she might catch a lot of things not meant for her.
