Walking through the forest, Toph grumbled and sighed to herself. When she had first joined up with them it hadn't seemed that bad of a deal: travel the world, teach the Avatar how to Earthbend, get out from her parents' crushing thumbs. No one had told her that they'd be pursued by three relentless witches from the Fire Nation, or that teaching Aang would be this difficult. How did he expect to learn anything if he didn't pay attention the whole time?

"And Twinkletoes wants to stop the Fire Lord before the end of summer," she muttered to herself, still walking. "At this rate, it's gonna take a miracle."

After a short while Toph was able to calm down and refocus herself. Feeling that she was calm enough to face her friends without biting their heads off, she turned around to head back to camp.

She went one, two steps - and suddenly the earth changed beneath her feet. Toph didn't know how or why it changed - just that it felt wrong. Like it was sick or something. That wasn't so bad. What was bad was how it affected her "sight"; it was like things were just slightly out of focus. And that, even though she didn't like to admit it, scared Toph just a little bit.

But she kept walking. One way or another, she was going to find out what was going on.
