Hamel is sitting in 202. Partially he's trying to figure out if he's hungry or not. Partially he's trying to figure out if maybe the work he did in the battle at the magog farm this time might mean that people don't hate him

"Wait, weren't you--"

And he bobbles up to her, all confusion and even a little bit of concern.

"What happened to your head? And, uh, the rest of you?"

See? That 'attempting to be nice' bit is really starting to work out for him. Or something.

Well, he sort of knew that.

"I meant about your head."

He points.

"I mean, I'd give you my hat but I kinda need it."

"Oh."

Headtilt.

"You're a virgin? I never would have guessed."

He's, um... trying to be complimentary.

And he's red as a beat.

...this was the difficult part in dealing with people. They asked you questions like that. Especially girls.

"Just, um... you're... that is..."

He's looking anywhere but at her.

"Want to borrow my hat?"

...oh god, he didn't.

He looks at her a moment and he winces, because he'd offered. It wasn't that anyone had asked it of him. He'd. Offered.

And they'd seen him losing control, tearing and ripping and shredding and letting the evil in his blood run free...

But there are memories, hard and painful memories of being stoned, of being hated and screeched at and run out of towns and villages... whenever the hat came off. Whenever they saw. Logic is a small thing when it comes up to pain like that, to memory and conditioning... but...

He pulls the hat from his head and offers it to her.

"Here."

"It'd probably look better if you were," he mutters. Then he shakes his head.

But now he feels awkward, exposed. His horn, his difference, is there for all to see.

God he wished Oboe was around.

"My, uh... my sister's here too now."

"It's complicated," he answers, "and, uh, if you see a girl with bandaged wings and red armor and a giant scythe who looks like me, be, um... careful with her. She's not used to people yet."

...yes, Hamel. Of course you're overprotective of the Hawk King, leader of the 3rd Demon Army and destroyer of several cities. Many things are different in different universes, but brothers aren't.
