A few hours after being carried to the infirmary by Simon and Kaylee, Beka woke up. She wasn't bleeding anymore, that was a good sign, however there was still a lack of her pointed haired, thick skulled engineer. Captain Beka Valentine could be thrown through a meat grinder and still ask what had happened to her crew ( Read more... )

"Not in my last shift," says Tris -- or, rather, Tris' disembodied voice, as he is at present under one of the cots.

There's a loose screw somewhere, and he's on a mission to find it.

Beka moved her head to look for the voice, "If you're really there and I'm not hallucinating, wave."

A hand holding an empty syringe shoots up from under the cot, and holds up one finger in salute.

"Down here."

"Ah," She went back to staring at the ceiling, content that she wasn't crazy, "And you are?"

"Doctor Tristan Williams, gynaecologist. Tris works." Around then, he pokes his head up to demonstrate that he is, in fact, an actual person.

A very pretty person, Beka noted, and filed his name away into her mental rolodex.

"Sorry, Doc, I think that's about the only part of me that isn't broken. Captain Beka Valentine," A small wave, "Pilot. Beka works."

"I'd join you in that," Tris replies. "I mean, I'm also a pilot. Outback RFDS."

"Really?" Beka attempted to prop herself up on her elbows, but with enough protest from her ribs, gave up, "Outback RFDS... Never heard of her, where's she stationed?"

Because if you are a pilot you naturally have a ship, and it is naturally more a part of you than your own hair.

"-- is the name of the service," Tris finishes. "Outback's Royal Flying Doctor Service. The aeroplane is called Ictus Solis, and she's right out back."

"Don't sit up," he adds helpfully. "Doctor's orders. Um. The other doctor's orders. Tam knows more about bones."

"What the hell is an aeroplane?" She mimicked his accent to compensate for the fact that she couldn't move.

This face, that Tris has now? It's the 'sad Aussie who thinks he is being made fun of for his nationality' face.

"Er. Natalie calls her a ship, I call her a 'plane, guest's choice, I suppose. Two engines and some wings and an instrument panel and such?"

Awww, no.

She has no idea where the hell he's from! To her, Australia is just another Earth Slum.

"Wings, huh? And she flies? Harper'd know that stuff better than me, he and all his ancient Earth history."

"Flies well, with all those missing parts still lyin' about somewhere I can't get back to."

Blink.

"When's 'ancient,' exactly?"

She peered at him, "Couple thousand years ago, AD 2000 or 3000."

Then Beka remembered what Rev had told her.

"You're.... you're not from the same world as me."

"Three thou--"

"Hell no. At least not the same time -- it's bloody 1993."

Eyebrow lift.

"Try AD 5000, CY 12088."
