Jim has a black eye today, courtesy of Gangrenous Talons, who fortunately doesn't live up to his name yet. It was because they caught him putting a part in where he'd already told them it wasn't supposed to go. They're catching on to him

Jim can be nice. Really. Especially to crying girls who have the guts to freeze Harth's face.

"That was pretty cool. What you did."

"At least you got him with the last third. That's mostly backwash."

It's how they deal. Laugh at what you can, and you'll get through the day. Maybe.

"Besides, that used to be Chase's cage. So there was probably something even worse than backwash in there anyway."

"The part of the water that gets in your mouth, but doesn't actually get swallowed. I'm pretty sure you got some of Chase's last meal in his eye.

Speaking of which, how'd you get it to freeze like that?"

". . . huh. Definitely not the Etherium."

Jim and his Etherium-based baggy pants are getting a bit lonely for a tentacled alien or two. Then this place would really feel like home. Except for the cages and the torture and the promise on the horizon of therapy bills longer than his forearm.

"Anyone who stands up to Harth like that . . . that was sweet," Jim repeats, because the girl looks like she's going to burst into tears any minute now, and that's not cool.

Jim says, "What apartments?"

For an instant, Jim almost - almost - smiles, a real, true, relieved smile -

But if there's one thing he's learned here, hope isn't much to rely on. He sinks, pragmatically, into his usual half-lidded slouch.

"Think they'll make it?" he asks, all skepticism.

Jim stares at Katara for a moment, considers her conviction. For someone about to cry, she has a lot of it.

"Okay," he says. Neutral and unswayed. He's been beaten too much to give into hope so easily.

"What's your name?"

"Jim. Jim Hawkins. From the planet Montressor, in the Etherium."

Pause.

"You probably don't know it."
