Bribery and threats... time and again, they do the job where nothing else could!
So,
legendarytobes and I made a little pact. We've been making strides at our respective jobs, fitting in more Legendary Women work (
check out our pieces on Medium), and dealing with our personal lives and health well (I will be posting about my wieght loss, but am waiting till it seems to be for keeps).
Anyway. our biggest failing was fic! It's really hard to fit it in at the end of a long day (or night for me. I work mostly nights).
So we made a deal Sunday Night. The both of us had to finish and post a chapter of our fic by Monday night or we could not watch ANY of the
That Guy With The Glasses contributors' videos (of which we are both HUGE fans) for an ENTIRE WEEK. If you don't know who they are, please correct that when you can. With so many reviewers over different media, you are bound to find something you like among them.
As I've been saying a lot lately, I don't watch a lot of current TV, but those reviewers are something I always find time for. That would have hurt.
Luckily, we both made the deadline, so we decided we'd do a fun, no-Smallville-allowed meme or challenge of my choosing for the first time. I decided, since our punishment was no TGWTG, I would find us a TGWTG ask meme. But I couldn't find anything that wasn't a kink meme and I just don't do real people fic or shipping, so that was a no. But I did find a neat art meme
here and have adjusted it to our needs, replacing some questions with ones better for us fans too lazy to draw.
So here it is! If you happen to be a fan or have friends who love these crazy reviewers, too, feel free to share, repost, or answer!
20 questions TGWTG Ask Meme (adapted from an art meme):

My answers:
1. Your TGWTG history... (rough example: How did you find it? How many hours did you lose when you did? How did you deal with bad movies/shows/music/games before it?
I first saw it, very randomly, when the "Nostalgia Chick" finalists were up and watched a few. I think I even voted for Lindsay as she reviewed Teen Witch, a cheesy super 80s movie my cousin and I used to love/hate-watch. I don't think I thought of it or the outcome after that for years and I think that might relate to all the TGWTG people moving from youtube to blip when the fair use stuff got (and remains) ridiculous. Some time later, Tobes pointed me to Nostalgia Chick and then I found The Critic and then... I don't think I came up for air for a week.
Before TGWTG, there was MST3K and Rifftrax, but they don't cover everything and sometimes you don't want to watch the whole awful movie, you just want to experience the most hilariously bad parts. I still like Mike/Joel and the bots and watch whenever they come out with something I want to see ripped on, but TGWTG is more bite-sized and easier to fit into a day, plus I love that I can see music and TV and books ripped on as well.
TWoP also filled the TV void... but their recaps lost that fun, surreal edge when Bravo bought them and I'd been disillusioned for some time.
2. What is your favorite Nostalgie Critic episode or moment? (you can pick one of each)
I think the violent "bat credit card" tirade from Batman and Robin is my favorite moment ever, but I think Shyamalan's Signs might be my favorite review as I watched it the most (honorable mentions to the animated Titanics, Neverending Story 3, and Secret of Nimh 2).
3. What is your favorite Nostlagia Critic running gag?
I think it's tied between the elephant in the room with his annoyed voice and Casper with "TIMING!"
4. Who is your favorite reviewer of all, NC aside? (Optional: What is your favorite episode from that reviewer?)
I'm going to have to pick Todd in the Shadows. I'm a musician (if you can call a singer that) and a pop listener (and I always root for it to be better than it is). It helps that the songs he reviews are popular and awful because I both know them and am already eager to hear someone pick them apart. Also, love his painfully researched One Hit Wonderland retrospectives.
I love his OHW on The Proclaimers as his respect for their body of work shines through.
5. Who is your facorite reviewer sidekick?
You know, I pick Tamara right now. She's always flanked by boys in Doug's entourage and I like how she is EVERY woman. But I also will always have affection for Nella as I know a lot of NChick's content is aided, largely unsung, by her. Also, she loved Newsies and I have a thing for that movie, too.
6. Who do you think is the most underrated reviewer on the site?
A few years ago, I'd have said MikeJ, but he's been promoted. Same with Rap Critic. And then I want to say Paw, but his content has been lax lately (no wonder as I hear he and Maven have a newborn). I think I'll go with Kyle/Oancitizen. He's not promoted on the main page right now and his reviews are painstakingly done and exhaustively researched.
7. Worst popular movie you've ever seen reviewed? (notice I specify popular, leaving out some of Snobs collection of terrors or he'd just win all the worst awards, poor man):
Scooby Doo. I can't believe that terrible thing made it's budget back, let alone 3 times. As a lifelong fan of the show, even the silliest episodes, I just wanted it to be good and came into it expecting that. Some of the casting was perfect (as in Lillard and Cardellini), but SMG and Freddie Prinze JR. were not right for fred and Daphne, but I don't think even better casting could have fixed the muddled plot and awful twist. Yes, we hated Scrappy! That doesn't mean we want to see him as the villain! We just didn't want to SEE HIM AT ALL! GOD!
8. Okay, fine! Worst movie you've experienced in all your time watching TGWTG:
You know, even though I said Cinema Snob would win for having all the exploitation and porn, I'm going to have to go with Oancitzen and A Serbian Film. I'm just so sorry that film was ever made and that anyone had to work on it, edit it, or see it. It makes me ill.
9. Ever had the critic or others negatively review a movie you actually loved? Which one?
There have been a few: It (the first half I will always love, but it super sucked in the second), The Little Mermaid, The Good Son, Signs, Moulin Rouge... I even liked Casper and Drop Dead Fred. There are others, I'm sure.
10. Were you still able to watch it/acknowledge flaws, yet still love it, or did it color your experience of the movie from then on?
You know, some I hadn't seen as an adult, so the flaws definitely stood out on the "older and wiser" view, but I still could enjoy the things I previously liked in them while acknowledging the plot holes or awful cliches, etc...
11. Favorite non-review video from The Nostalgia Critic?
I don't know. This may still count as a review, but I loved his retrospective on Siskel and Ebert and his Animaniacs video with all the interviews with the people involved! Loved both and have rewatched several times.
12. Favorite non-review video from anyone else on the site?
Nchick and Nella's "Fifty Shades of Green"/"Booze Your Own Adventure." It's just such an interesting process, seeing them crowdsource a stealth parody paranormal teen romance!
13. Favorite Anniversary special?
I'm torn between Suburban Knights and To Boldly Flee.
14. Favorite Cross-over review?
I think Moulin Rouge. The cameos were amazing and the parody songs will stay with me forever.
15. Is there a movie/show/song that's never been reviewed on the site that you desperately want to see (you can pick one of each)?
Movie: The Pirate Movie (I want that so much I'm about to start my own youtube channel JUST to tear it apart).
Show: I wish someone would go over how and why Heroes went so wrong.
Song: I think Iggy Azalea needs more hate than she's getting, just in general, so I hope Todd and Rap Critic get on that.
16. If everyone from TGWTG were on sitcom, what would the main plot be?
You know, Just playing to their personas and only using the most prolific reviewers, I'd see it as a tropey workplace comedy set in media - news, radio, both, who knows? Doug's Critic persona would be a long-suffering boss with controlling tendencies, Lupa would be his crazy assistant (like Bubbles on AbFab). Cinema Snob would be the demanding star talent along with NChick, who with Nella would be always plotting to take things over because they would ham that up well, all Rocky and Mugsy-like. Kyle and Paw would be snooty researchers. Linkara and Mike J would be snarky techies. Todd and Rap Crtiic would be too-cool-for-the-industry buskers peripheral to the plot and Film Brain and Diamanda Hagan would be recurring guest stars as someone's crazy relative/school friend/former unbalanced lover.
17. If the only dating pool in the world were TGWTG contributors, all single in this scenario, which one would you want to pick or could see yourself getting along with? (pic optional)
You know, I have a wee crush on Todd in all his mysteriousness and pop music love...
But I'd probably fit better with Paw. He nerds out on musicals and has a shrine to Stephen Sondheim. We'd have the most fun together.

19. What are the two natural resources aliens bent on conquering earth fear most?
I won't answer because I made up the question. But you better get it right, Tobes! Or I take your fancard away!
20. Tag someone!
Over to you, Tobes!
This went so well, we are going to do it again, so look for more fic from both of us by Friday and a fun meme or challenge of Tobes' choosing!
